How I Met Your Mother': James Van Der Beek among guest stars for final Robin Sparkles installment

by Sandra Gonzalez

After the last new episode of How I Met Your Mother, executive producer Craig Thomas promised EW a star-studded fourth and final installment of the Robin Sparkles saga, and today, CBS announced the huge list of expected guest stars.

Scheduled to appear in the Feb. 4 episode are: Alan Thicke, James Van Der Beek, Paul Shaffer, Jason Priestley, Alex Trebek, K. D. Lang, former Barenaked Ladies frontman Steven Page, Rush frontman Geddy Lee, and former Canadian hockey player Luc Robitaille.

The appearance will mark Thicke’s fourth time making a cameo in a Robin Sparkles-centric episode, and this will be Van Der Beek’s second time on the show. In past episodes, Thicke has played himself while Beek portrayed Simon, Robin’s first boyfriend who also appeared in her “Sandcastles in the Sand” music video. Trebek has also previously appeared on the show.

How I Met Your Mother, which recently was rumored to be returning for a ninth season, returns with new episodes Jan. 14.

One or two more points.

Geddy is not really a 'Frontman' in the Robert Plant sense.

And who the fark are YOU to call it a 'lame' sitcom. I mean, maybe some RUSH fans actually watch that type of dreck. Whatever floats your boat. Don't be so judgmental. It could be worse, Geddy could be doing a cameo on Game of Thrones and we'd all get glimpse of the real Fender Bass.

I think they should be worked into The Big Bang Theory. Sheldon is already on record as saying 73 is the best number and went into why, including its relation to 21 and 12 and 1-0-0-1-0-0-1.

Amy needs to learn a little Tom Sawyer on the harp...:D

 I love the irony in the response (I added the bold). :ebert: I hope it was intentional.

I don't watch the show but I'll be recording and saving that night. Geddy!

Geddy already made a very VERY brief cameo as an extra in some sitcom a few years back (I'm assuming that sitcom was lame too). His daughter was one of the extras too. Someone on TRF should be able to remember this. If it helps spark someone's memory, I do remember that Sally Struthers was one of the guest stars in that episode.

I think that was the Gilmore Girls.

you guys don't read threads before you post in them?? ;)

I read that today. 73 is the 21st prime number, its inverse 37 is the 12th prime number. Its a palindrome. 1001001.

It is fantastic

I wonder who the Rush fan is?

Just someone with an opinion.

I didn't realize it was a message board, where such things are apparently frowned upon. :(

I used the title to play off the thread title "The Beginning is Near".

Obviously the appearance of Ged on a lame network sitcom is not the end of Rush.

It's hyperbole. Sometimes used to draw attention to something...

Hyperbole? Never in a million years would I have suspected you of using hyperbole, LABT. ;)

Come on it's not that bad!

Plus it's an OK show and he'll just make a cameo apperance, they're just treated like any other "big" rock band now!

I still want a Simpsons episode with the band, it's like the hall of fame for me!

I was never in with "smart" kids. I learned a new word from this post

Reminds me of the time Ozzy did a commercial with Justin Bieber except this time the artist has my respect and isn't a sellout. Oh well, if Geddy wants to do it let him do it. My opinion of him won't change for one silly appearance. Nothing to see here lads. Move along.

It would only be "selling out" if Ged was doing it for money. I doubt what they're paying him really figured into the decision.

I remember when many Rush fans used to bitch when the band didn't get any recognition. Now that they're acknowledged for having some cultural significance, it's a bad thing?

I think it's fine. Let the Boys have some fun.

It's a funny show.

Good for Ged, why the hell not?

Yeah...who gives a flying f**k?

Really? Are we a bunch of 20 year old hippies? Sell out?

LMFAO.

It's sad that Geddy is stooping to this level.

Yes it is. The rich get bored, and when you get older, i guess you don't mind looking foolish. Hell, look at Betty White, maybe she is a real inspiration to Rush now. There must be some money involved.

Glittering prizes and endless compromises

Shatter the illusion of integrity, yeah.

Money involved? I'm sure there was, after all "10 bucks is 10 bucks" right?

I just watched the show, it was recorded from last night. I had not seen this thread so it was a surprise to me. I also thought it was cool, especially when someone says that the Robin Sparkles started the grunge movement. One of they main characters says something like "Well he isn't a music guy." Then it cuts right to Geddy saying how the grunge movement started with Robin's song.

It's true, ten bucks is ten bucks. Geddy is a professional. :D

Geddy had a few shots, I was surprised by that. The "he's not a music guy" reference was funny. I also liked how all Canadians remember which Tim Horton's and doughnut they were eating (Halifax, Maple Walnut crunch) when "a little piece of Canada died that day".

Quite amusing, although I don't care for the show anymore than I did. Glad to see Geddy though. He's great in all settings!

 :geddy:
