Van Halen - ADKOT

Testament - Dark Roots Of The Earth

Rush - Clockwork Angels

Accept - Stalingrad

Kreator -Phantom Antichrist

Overkill - The Electric Age

have you heard the new destruction?

If Day Of Reckoning is the last , then yes, i like it . Sounds like they did back in the 80's

that's a cool one, but nah they got a new one this year called spiritual genocide. it's pretty rad, same old thrash shit but it sounds good. nothin tops their first album for me though.

That is a perfect METAL Dad list!! The Accept nod is EPIC!

I can't get into Overkill or Kreator. Should I?

Accept and Kreator toured together this year. I fukking missed it!

Clockwork Angels is my album of the year.

My runner up is Dark Roots Of The Earth from Testament. Old school metal album in modern times, the way metal should be done :notworthy:

This is what I would say. This is my favorite Testament album since Preach.

I saw a few people mention the new Soundgarden. I have just one question about it, how many listens does it take for this album to get good?

I've listened to it five or six times and it's a very average album. There's just nothing to it at all and none of the songs stand out. I'm guessing Soundgarden just gave in to recording a new album because the demand and money was so overwhelming. Well, they didn't put any effort into this at all and it's easliy my disappointment of the year. Keep in my that I didn't have huge hopes for it to beging with. I wasn't expecting another BadMotorFinger or Superunknown but at least something that was on par with Down On The Upside and they couldn't even do that.

This album proves that sometimes it's just better for some bands to just let the past be the past and ignore the reunion album. They can do the reunion tour but if the stuff you've written is this big of a fall off then don't bother with the new album. Soundgarden should know that this album doesn't cut it after this long of a wait and they're kidding themselves if they think it does.

I like the new album a lot. Is it as good as or better than their greatest work? No. But saying that they shouldn't release it if they can't match their peak is like saying Rush shouldn't have released Vapor Trails or S&A or Clockwork Angels. None of those albums are as good as PeW or Pictures. I will admit to my own bias; I'm a big Soundgarden fan, and a big Audioslave fan, and, yes, a big Chris Cornell fan. King Animal is an enjoyable album. I appreciate it for what it is. A Different Kind of Truth isn't as good as Fair Warning either, but that's not the same as saying it's not good.

If you think King Animal is average, then that's your assessment of the album. I can't, and won't, try to change your view. But I'm not certain that's solely because it's a reunion album. DOTU isn't as good as SU either, and those two are separated by 2 years.

You can't compare Soundgarden and Rush here because they're both different situations. Rush didn't break up and then 17 years later come out with and average album. I said that I didn't expect for Soundgarden to top their best stuff but they should at least know if what they're writting are good solid songs or not. It just seems to me like they came out with something to just shut people up and didn't put much effort into what they were doing. Where are the heavy Iommi-like riffs Kim Thyal used to write? Every riff on this album sounds the same and sounds like something any run of the mill rock band can come up with.

Alice In Chains is a perfect example of a band who waited many years to release a new album and it was a very good effort and worthy of a place in AIC's catalog. The point is, if you're gonna be gone for that long you need to come out with an album that is at least good and has some memorable songs on it. Soundgarden did not do this, they rocorded the most average stuff they could and left nothing to remember this album by.

Me too. I think Formation Of Damnation was pretty damn good also. I'll be seeing them on Feburary 17th :haz:

Like I said, I certtainly can't quibble with any of this. It's purely subjective. But, I will say that I disagree with you that Black Gives Way to Blue is on par with say Facelift. I got BGWTB the day it was released. I probably haven't listened to it in almost 3 years. I'd place a song like By Crooked Steps over anything on that album, but admittedly I've always preferred Soundgarden to AIC.

I've only purchased two current albums in 2012:

#1 - Clockwork Angels (their finest, imho)

#2 - Muse, The 2nd Law - a textured and rich melodic beauty. I love this album and think Matt Bellamy is an amazing artist.

I've heard the Black Keys. They're good, but not really my thing. I'm not really "prog" or "metal" (I have my leanings) but my friends describe me as the rocker chick. I like what I like and appreciate many, many genres. I try to stay current but sometimes it is difficult to listen with open ears.

VH - I heard and did not like Tattoo. A lot. The other tracks sounded good but I wouldn't (and won't) buy it because of the Wolfgang nonsense. I really like VH and enjoyed Van Hagar, but their time has past, imo. The new stuff, for me, - meh.

Aerosmith - I haven't really enjoyed an album from Aerosmith since Toys. PV wasn't bad (I liked Ragdoll). The new one - meh.

Rush consumed 2012 for me. Not a bad way to spend half a year. :)

I agree...to me the Hagar era is WAAAAAYYYYYY under-appreciated. They were at their very best during that time. And getting rid of Michael Anthony was just dumb...Van Halen was awesome because of his backing vocals as much as any other element.

Rush was THE album of the year for me...that and "Release Me" by Lyle Lovett

Easily The Afterman by Coheed & Cambria. Surprisingly it's their shortest as well, I literally listen to it over and over again still 2 months after its release.

Runners up:

Passion Pit - Gossamer

Rush - Clockwork Angels

Beardfish - The Void

Marillion - Sounds That Can't Be Made

Neon Trees - Picture Show

Deftones - Koi No Yokan

Between The Buried & Me - Parallax 2

Anathema - Weather Systems

Silversun Pickups - Neck Of The Woods

A Different Kind Of Truth

Clockwork Angels

I bought several albums in 2012, but these are the only two (worth mentioning) that were actually released this year! But they are also rebirths for two of my favorite bands and two of the best albums I've heard in many years.

Great list but the Edison's Children album was released last year, I believe.

Ok, as everyone has jumped to this thread, as it was before..I don't mind hanging out an island btw :sundog:

1. The Smashing Pumpkins - Oceania

2. Rush - Clockwork Angels (it's very good but not great)

3. Anathema - Weather Systems

Oceania is AMAZING! Pure wonderfullness. And, I of course totally agree that Clockwork Angels is one of the best, if not THE best, of this past year. I'll add Messhugah's Koloss. :)

OMG! If they do, first that means Tool has a new release. And, number two so does Messhugah! Dream tour, no? Can you imagine that?

WHAT? Oceania over Clockwork?

I'm shocked!

I was bored with Oceania. I love Chamberlain though.
