Seven Cities of Gold sound effects

This song just keeps getting better and better for me. I hear a couple of things in SCOG and I haven't seen them addressed elsewhere.

At 2:14-:15, I hear something that sounds like the original (TOS) Star Trek Enterprise (NCC-1701) red alert sound. It only sounds once and I don't recall hearing it in another like section of the song. I hear it on the CD and my iPod.

At a few different times (1:37 & 3:10, for example), I hear what sounds like a Hammond B3 organ? I don't recall ever hearing a B3 as part of Rush's instrumentation.

Does any one else hear these effects and sounds? unsure.gif

Could be....trying to sort it out and isolate is hard. I think its a funky chord with a flange effect at 1:37...that's a guitar in my mind....but I could be wrong. Alex does so much stuff in terms of effects. It's peeked my interest that's for sure. This song is all about Geddy...kicking major ass Edited by Tombstone Mountain

I don't hear that. I hear Geddy's vocal echoing out, but no red alert. Then again, I'm listening through my laptop speakers. confused13.gif

I definitely hear the organ. In the CA credits, it doesn't mention anyone but Rush playing on SCOG. Alex and Geddy were given keyboard credit, so it had to be one of them. There was an organ keyboard sound on Cut To The Chase. That album listed "Additional keyboards by John Webster".

I hear some sort of weird effect at 2:15, but only when listening on an iPod with the volume way up. It only lasts a fraction of a second, and would go unnoticed unless you're specifically listening for it.

To me, 7COG is reminiscent of Promise from Victor, especially the guitar solo. Does anyone else notice the similarity?

Best song on the album.  Glad to see its finally starting to get some recognition around here.

Probably not the best song on the album, but i instantly loved it and still do wub.gif

I agree with you C2BF...which says something about the album...so many GREAT songs.

The outro to the guitar solo is Alex unhinged smile.gif

Funny you should mention that...

I had to take a CA break (heresy? Spent a couple of weeks spinning PT (wow, Lightbulb Sun is good!)) and just got back to listening to CA yesterday. SCOG and The Anarchist have really grown on me. The opening to SCOG is one of the strongest song openers I've heard in a while.

I'll give it a listen and see if I can hear those parts.

Definitely heard the Hammond Organ sounds - very clear once you're listening for them. As with some other parts on the album, I can't tell if it's a low-level keyboard or some effect on the guitar? Perfect sound for those parts of the song!

I listened for the bridge alarm, couldn't make it out on the car stereo - not the best system in the world. I wouldn't put anything past them so I'll avoid blaming it on a spurious inter-harmonic cross-distortion!

I did notice a slight variation in my CD time vs. my iPod time.

Just to add an aural reference point: "a splendid mirage in this desolation" is the vocal line. In the right channel (I can not hear it in the left channel) at the end of the vocal line at 2:14-ish - Geddy descends on the word "desolation" and the effect rises as Geddy sings the fourth syllable. To my ear, it is not it reverb - I can't hear an originating instrument. The sound does not repeat at 5:27-ish when "desolation" is repeated.

I hear it more easily at lower volumes. Although, I still hear it at loud volumes. Truck stereo definitely gets a workout with this song. smile.gif

This one and Wreckers were the first songs to really hit me. Bass on seven cities and vocals and lyrics on Wreckers. Of course The Garden is beautiful but didn't grab me just made me cry.....ah us Rush girls are such sensitive girls

I don't think he was talking about that type of effect.

Anyways, I'm glad I saw this thread, or I would have never noticed the Hammond. Now I'm going to pick it up every time I listen to it. As for the Star Trek Red Alarm sound...I hear a guitar effect, but no alarm sound.

I wondered what happened to this thread. Figured it just languished.

I understand flanger. I didn't think it was a flange. In this instance, I found the delay was so pronounced as to be a new sound itself.

I did find an example of a whoosh flanger http://www.pond5.com...-and-delay.html. Yes, I think they used some variation of the flange effect. And, it is still so pronounced to my ear all these months later. I don't hear it as well at ~05:07.

And I know the sound on CoS to which you're referring. That backward sounding cymbal (hi-hat?). Strange part of that song.

Thanks. :)
