The final cut on S&A, to me, is the weakest, followed by The Larger Bowl. I really dig the rest of the songs immensely, including one of Rush's best instrumentals, TMMB. Hope and Malnar, albeit short, are real treats.

what final cut you referring to please?

final cut = final song = we hold on

oh right thanks , been a while since heard that expression, got it mixed up in my mind with a floyd album i think soz

Am I the only one on the planet? Too me, Snakes and Arrows is just a better album from start to finish. A beautiful album. I would put it in my top three all time Rush albums.
Don't get me wrong, Clockwork rocks. And at times rocks even harder than S&A. I mean, there's some pretty intense playing on it. But sometimes it seems to go a little too long. It drags. And some songs I'm just not crazy about. And I am a huge Rush fan, I've never disliked anything. But this one seems to have a little more bark than bite.

I don't.

I like Far Cry and the instrumentals. But CA is their best album since Signals. IMO.

Wish I could have made a spreadsheet like post for you guys with this one.

Anyways, if you couldn't tell, this concludes that for me, these two albums are about equal.

Sorry to hear that sad.gif

Some of it's songs are truly horrid, but you'll find something in it to appreciate sooner or later.

That may be the consensus of opinion, but I think the word masterpiece is being thrown around pretty frivolously.

While I think 6 songs are excellent, an additional 3 are best described as merely good, 2 are bad and BU2B2 --it's not worth mentioning.

Nevertheless, a pretty good album.

I also like CA very much, but I don't see it as a "masterpiece". In my view, Moving Pictures and Hemispheres are most definitely masterpieces, and Permanent Waves is close, but CA does not seem like a masterpiece to me.

As for S&A vs. CA, I have a sort of mixed opinion. I feel that Main Monkey Business and Malignant Narcissism are better than any song on CA. But the only other two songs I really like from S&A are Workin them Angels and Far Cry. So overall, I easily think CA is a better album.

So there is my opinion, FWIW. I'm really looking forward to the Oct 12 Philly show... can't wait to see Headlong Flight live! 1022.gif

it can be a little frustrating when you were hoping for something really good and can't hear it or warm up to the music. i think there are 5-6 good tunes on there but not liking the rest of it plus even the ones that i like i haven't been listening to much. give it a few more listens and maybe you will find something on there you like.

I dont like the 60s vibe on S&A at all. I wasnt born until the late 70s and really just never got into the sound going on in the 60s too much, and they really fed off of Feedback when writing S&A. Too much of a folk vibe to it, and overall just more of the safe standard issue rock song writing theyve been trapped in for years.

I LOVE the sound quality of it though. Huge step up from VT. It's very crisp, good dynamics. I think sonically its sooo much better sounding than CA, dont know why since they had the same producer and engineer. Just listen to the drums on both albums, the drums on S&A sound so much better and were killed on CA. Plus CA just sounds very muddy, especially the guitars.

Sometimes Ill crank stuff like TMMB or Spindrift (love both songs), and they really sound great, but crank up CA and its just a total turd and falls apart. But although I find CA to be pretty dull, I do think it sounds more modern than S&A, so I still like CA more although I dont even listen to CA anymore. Ill come back to it at some point like I do all Rush albums eventually.
