Rush not nice guys?!

There's a guy on the Talkbass forums who was once a respected writer and interviewer for Bass Player magazine.

His most sage piece of advice: "Never meet your heroes".

His reasoning of course, was that the majority of them almost always turned out to be horrible, horrible people. He gave us a few anecdotes from interviews with some of the most famous bass players in the world. A good number of them were, at best, arrogant, egotistical and spoiled. At worst, they were homophobic, racist, anti-Semitic, misogynistic, and in one case, possibly in possession of child porn.

Sometimes I do wonder if I'm better off not knowing everything about the artists I aspire to follow.

This is good advice.

I think Neil even said the same thing in one of his books.

I've never met any of the band members and don't think I want to. Meet and greets must be nice but from what I've heard it's like a cafeteria line, say "hi" take pic leave, Next.

I have a friend who ran into Alex in '87 or '88 one snowy and windy afternoon outside of a hotel in CT and he said Alex was very nice and cordial, they spoke for a few minutes, he gave Alex a note and they parted ways. A few days later Alex sent him a letter saying thanks for the kind words he'd written in the note.

That was nice of him.

I guess I can relate being an introvert of sorts myself. If you encounter an introvert regardless of who they are, you have to know going in that his/her instinct is to flee and avoid.

I have been involved with a large youth sport organization for well over 10 years. I guess you can say that I'm the "go to" guy for all information about it in our area. With that I just cringed at what I wrote but it's true. At meetings or at ball games, I'm out going, confident, accessible. When I see someone away from that setting, I'm avoiding, quiet, and hopeful that the coach, parent, or league admin will not recognize me and very relieved when they bypass.

I guess it's no different for them. In the pic above, I would say that geddy doesn't dislike you or is bothered by you. There's a little war inside his head where half is appreciative and glad to meet you while the other half is telling his body to get the hell out of there. It's not personal.

JMHO.

Here's some more fuel for the fire.. tongue.gif

I don't believe Rush were always saintly, they were young I'm sure they could be a- holes at times. Weren't we all in our youth? I don't know how much I believe on this but still think there might of been some incident happened. confused13.gif Cherie Currie sounds a bit bitter and jealous about 2.gif success don't you think? wink.gif Washed up hasbeen... yes.gif

I love Alex. I met him on two occasions on the obviously stressful Moving Pictures tour. He was super nice meeting me before going into the Watergate hotel. When I met him before soundcheck the second day he seemed stressed, but nonetheless remained cordial and signed my Archives album. Never have I seen or heard of him losing composure or acting in bad character. Alex will always be the essence/main pillar of Rush, imo.

Lifeson is the only one I'd approach and even that would be a judgment call, just based on what I have heard about each of the guys. Neil obviously a no-no...Geddy I have heard is a toughie too. Lifeson seems to be the one more cordial and down to Earth.

The one time I did meet Geddy at his record signing he didn't seem to be enjoying himself at all. No smile, little eye contact, and the pictire I got with him is funny because I have a huge grin and he looks so annoyed....and this was at a public appearance where people are buying his album and he's SUPPOSED to be nice, so I can imagine how it would go when he's just trying to enjoy a baseball game outside of his Rush world...

We all have bad days. We all have days where if someone says the wrong thing, we might snap. Everyone judging Geddy based on some heresy story by a radio guy might be getting all bent for nothing.

The 2 times I have approached celebrities about a picture were average experiences. They both seemed annoyed but didn't come out and say anything asshole-like. They took their picture and were done with it

I would never approach any of them anywhere. I wouldn't even want to meet them under any circumstances...

I'm sure the feeling is mutual. tongue.gif

Lol, I thought of that while writing but I probably would have done the same as he did that night, under the circumstances (unless he was under the influence of something other than R-OH)

Me to a tee. I can be outgoing, jovial and social when needed. but my default during downtime is to seek solitude.

I would laugh too if I had to sit through a Runaways concert. Regardless of whether or not it's true everyone has a right to be an ass here and there and why should it be life altering if some people think your music is crap when you already have records being released? I think it's either a fake story made to attract some attention to the band or a feeble attempt to bring Rush down a few notches. If it was bad blood they would have come out with it years ago. I would hate to be the person who holds a grudge for DECADES. Edited by USB Connector

I have no idea what the real story is, so I will not make a judgment either way regarding Rush or The Runaways. However, I think that a band bagging on, or publicly laughing at, another band is really lame, regardless of how bad they think they are. Anyone who does this, Rush or otherwise, are being dicks. All bands were likely pretty shitty until they figured out what they were doing.
