What went right?

For those of you who appreciate CA, what did Rush do that was most important to you that makes you like this album? How is that the same or different than previous albums?

For me, it's the imtensity of their playing and concentrated approach....does not feel loose, scattered, and wobbly like the prev 3 Rush albums. It's a mean and lean musical style....there is concentrated anger, attitude and focus, which I love. They went for the jugular and did it with passion. The whole album has a live feel and sound.

what went right for CA were the first 5 songs written before the time machine tour, followed by the break in writing for the time machine tour which is what went wrong as they werent in the sweet spot anymore

The record rocks, tells a good story, and has very good performances on it.

Well, at least you salvaged 5, which used to be the majority of a full Rush album in the early days....

goodpost.gif Good questions.

Well, smilies-8579.png

I like the production; I think it is thoroughly modern sounding. I like the songs; I think they are rhythmically strong, lyrically interesting, melodic, dynamic and sonically diverse. I like the overarching story and loose narrative style. Rush sounds better than they ever have.

By contrast, to my ear the catalog sounds like it was recorded 20 or 30 years ago and the technology sounds dated (very 70s, 80s or 90s). That's not an insult. The Beatles and Stones sound like they were recorded in the 60s. It doesn't detract from the music - still great songs.

For me, MP (my gold standard) and some earlier work had no weak songs that dragged down the overall quality of the album. Other albums since MP, and some prior, had a few weak songs. This is to be expected since Rush grows with every album and experiments with new sounds and songs. They can't all be homeruns.

CA is astounding; a 600 foot homerun.

I love the growth of the band and CA demonstrates a career worth of love and dedication.

Oh...and they ROCK!!! 1022.gif

Goose~bump moments throughout the whole album, accompanied by tears in a couple of spots, for me at least.

It's been a LONG time since that has happened from a new Rush release...first time I needed a tissue.

A Classic in my world!

Good post and something I've always argued. While their records over the last 20 years have been good somewhere along the way they kind of lost that goosebump factor. It is back in a big way on this record thankfully.

Conviction....

Really well thought out album, great rush of old playing, superb vocal melodies.

The lyrics are not alienating, being both universal and interpersonal. Having a narrative, but the listener still being able to relate and connect emotionally with the words..

Its one of the best rush albums, classic.

Edit; Love the guitar heaviness and it rocks!

- Concept album with great story

- Experiments with sounds - guitars, vocals (Carnies, BU2B2)

- Fantastic string arrangements

- Hooks, Refrains, Melodies (The Wreckers, Wish Them Well, 7 Cities...)

- Groovy, trippy jam sections

- Great artwork

- The Wassermans ^..^^..^

- .............................(it's your turn to complete the list)

I think the concept album idea was well executed, and tells a good story.

There is a really nice mix of old rush sound and modern day rush sound. Seven Cities of Gold carries an old rush sound to it and rocks holy balls. Halo Effect sounds like SnA, and it fits in well with all the songs surrounding it.

The mastering is good.. can't imagine why people complain.

Yes, Alex does power away on power chords, but I have no problem with it. It fits in well with the songs, and Geddy's bass is insane. Alex does have some fantastic leads.

Neil's lyrics are splendid, the Garden is a masterpiece IMO.

It's a Rush album.

They will tour on it.

Seven Cities of Gold is a Raiders of the Lost Ark facemelter...

though rocking holy balls is quite accurate!!! rofl3.gif
