Good God! I've been away from the forum for about a week and it seems like in that time the haters have completely taken over! Why is Rush not aloud to write a song with a verse/chorus/bridge alignment (The Wreckers) or a song with a nice bouncy melody (Wish Them Well)?

CA is a good if not great balanced record that the guys can be very proud of.

I cannot believe that a Forum member would say, "I'd be embarrassed for Rush if they played that song on the radio." What a worthless, obnoxious thing to say. I'm sorry but seriously, as much as I hate Superconductor I would never say I was embarrassed for Rush. What embarrasses me are Rush fans that act like turds every time the guys try to give us something new.

Like the new album, hate the new album-- Whatever. But don't for a second feel embarrassed for Rush-- They are a lot better than you!

It's sub-par album, and to me The Wreckers is one of the worst tracks....doesn't sound like Rush or represent any aspect of Rush that I like..

lol. Define Rush. Please.

Funny you should say "define Rush", because that is exactly what I was thinking. IMO, if there is one song on Clockwork Angels that "defines" the trademark sound of Rush, it is The Wreckers. I would confidently assert that any astute listener of music remotely familiar with Rush would instantly identify The Wreckers as a Rush song at first listen, even if you take away the vocals which are obviously a dead give away. The Wreckers, in my humble opinion, literally drips with the essence of Rush, and it is my 2nd favorite on the album, only behind Headlong Flight.

Wow. When I made this post, I had just started reading this thread and didn't realize it was 11 pages and how contentious it had become. I'm sorry I posted here now, because I'd prefer to see this thread just die and go away. I'm even more sorry that I just wasted 45 minutes of my life trying to read the rest of the thread. That was about as painful as trying to get through an episode of Jackass or one of the America's dumbest video shows.

Really?? How so? It sounds almost nothing like something Rush would normally do. Take the vocals out, and there is nothing musically that sounds like Rush. That's where my comment comes from. Sounds like something that was thrown together and highly influenced by Nick/Foo Fighters for sure..

Hmm...I guess I'm not the only one on the forum nazi's poo list.

Empty Mindless Spectre...I don't share the enthusiasm you have for The Wreckers, but I'll respect your choice and leave it at that.

Alot of these arguments is like arguing about who has the best pizza. At the end of the day it doesn't really matter. We still buy the albums, go to the concerts, enjoy the music (to varying degrees) and the boys have fun and get well paid. Take a good look around at the concert...not everyone is air drumming like a dork, but they're still enjoying the music.

Respect people with different opinions...it's not like they slapped your mama.

You know... I just listened again, and I can see your point. Most of the body of the song, with the acoustic guitar sound, is quite different. I guess I was focused mostly on the chorus and the last roughly minute of the song, which sound very much like Grace Under Pressure to me(especially Between the Wheels). I get kind of caught up in the lyrics and how they relate to the title as well. As I interpret it, "The Wreckers" is that invisible force in nature that floats around and wreaks havoc with the lives of unfortunate, unsuspecting souls on a seemingly random basis. As I often do, I really enjoy the way Neil has lyrically articulated this phenomena in this song, and that certainly influences how much I like the song. Of course this is just my interpretation, and may not indeed be exactly what Neil was thinking when he wrote it. I'd like to hope I'm at least pretty close though.

Regardless, I think it's a great song. But that's just my opinion.

Reminds me more of REM and U2. I enjoy the song, but, yeah, I don't think that it's very representative of the band.

Fanboys ruin everything.

You mean, "haters ruin everything," right? tongue.gif

It seems to me that it's the bashers/haters who are having a hard time dealing with dissenting opinions in this thread.

After all, go ahead and post whatever negative opinions you want: CA sucks, Nick sucks, The Wreckers sucks, the mix sucks (I'll partly agree on that one), whatever...

But it's a messageboard, right, so shouldn't you should expect others to post THEIR reactions? Or if someone disagrees with your negative viewpoint, are they just supposed to STFU? confused13.gif

By the way, I can understand how some might dislike the chorus or verse of The Wreckers, but how can you not love the bridge? confused13.gif It's some of the most "cinematic" Rush music we've heard in a LONG time. When Ged belts out "oh the human chain/leaves a bloody stain" with that string part, it's really one of those old-school Rush moments. 1022.gif

To the OP: stop trying to understand and just learn to ignore. It's your only hope.

For some odd reason, there are tons of people in the world who love old Rush and hate new Rush but they are somehow drawn to this and other forums to talk about how much they hate the new Rush. It is very strange for sure but I can tell you, I have seen it happen on this forum for years now. One would think that if one hates something, one would simply move on and find something else to do but that is not the case here. Scientists all around the world are baffled.

Ok, that was a bit harsh..tired of the can-do-no-wrong crowd and Rush employees here.

Would like to listen to the album more often, but from what I've heard so far, I just don't have the motivation to.

Hey man. Rush has made their share of mistakes with this album, namely, they made it too brief...needs to be a 5 disc set!!! trink39.gif

I guess Alex and Geddy lied about swapping instruments and jamming when they came up with The Wreckers. confused13.gif They were secretly listening to Foo Fighters CDs, trying to come up with something that would please fanboi Nick.

Then Nick gently dominated the weak-willed Al and Ged, like Neil does so often, to steer the song in the direction he wanted. I heard they even brought in Dave Grohl to sing the chorus, but decided not to use his tracks at the last minute. ph34r.gif confused13.gif

I mean that fanboys ruin everything. This thread is loaded with horrible fanboys on both sides of the issue. If you like "The Wreckers", you're an idiot with no musical taste and don't deserve to listen to the band in the first place (according to the "elitist Rush connoisseur" type of fanboy). If you don't like it, you're a miserable "hater" who can't be happy about anything and are probably lying about liking the band anyway (according to the YOU HAVE TO LIKE EVERYTHING THAT RUSH DOES OR YOU AREN'T A TRUE FAN type of fanboy). What separates fanboys from plain old fans is that fanboys have to be retarded about what they like. When they argue, everybody loses.

I'm beginning to remember why I took such a long break from this forum.
