The Garden In Concert...

I have a theory on this. I think Alex will play it.

I seriously doubt that Jason Sniderman will be touring with them. Geddy usually plays synths on tour. I have never heard him play the piano. It has been reported by Nick R. that Alex wrote this piano piece and showed Jason how the part went and he came in on the album to record the piece. I feel that Alex will play his guitar piece on his Axcess right up until the piano comes in, give a final strum on the guitar, play the piano piece, then come in on the solo. I could be wrong, Geddy could play it, but I doubt it will be Jason.

I don't think I have ever been more excited to see Rush play a song live before as I am to see them perform The Garden. This will be probably the best thing we will ever see them do....at least dating back to Xanadu with the doublenecks. Maybe ever. Seriously. common001.gif

This entire album gives me this vibe. I certainly did not have it with Vapor Trails, or Snakes and Arrows. And I haven't had it since the 80's. The early 80's. Every song is tailor made for live performance.

Oh hell, I have another erection thinking about all of this. My wife is gonna think I am surfing porno. Geezus!

Given Alex's enthusiasm of this song, they would surely play it, and the theory of Alex playing guitar until the point of the piano part (which he wrote), would surely be played by him until the solo. That is a very plausibly idea. I CANNOT FLIPPING WAIT TO HEAR IT!!!!!

That's a plausable theory about Alex playing it, but I have a feeling that with a lot of practice Geddy could nail it so Alex can concentrate on his guitars.

I think this song will take on a new dimension and be utterly unforgettable live. I really hope they play it.

Especially considering alex is PLAYING his guitar during the piano part. You can clearly hear it. the staccatto or whatever you wanna call it, before and during the individual notes, is guitar, and piano.

Listen again....those notes are piano notes, not the guitar. But certainly could be played by acoustic guitar in concert. It would just be slightly different.

I've isolated it. it's both. The guitar is faint, but is there. You could get away with not playing those soft notes, but it would probably sound weird.

Sounds good to me although I'm not a big fan of seeing Alex play keyboards...Last time I can remember seeing him play was on the HYF tour in Time Stand Still when he played them with his face.

Alex played keyboards on the last tour too in Time Stand Still. But it's not a particularly hard piano part so I'm sure Geddy could manage it. And I have no doubt that they will play it live - Geddy has said numerous times how he considers it to be a big step forward as a songwriter.

I think The Garden is a "must" play.

It's THAT good!

No, the song is not THAT good and no new song for a classic rock band is a "must play" unless that song becomes a hit for them.

If they do play it, the perfect spot would be right after Neil's solo. Alex can do one of his little acoustic things right before it and then go into the song after that. As far as the piano part goes, since they're hiring some people to play the orchestra parts live, why not hire a pianist to play on The Garden? Of course, if they do hire a piano player for the tour, they have to play Available Light as well.

I think they will bring a pianist along with them, I was thinking why they would have 10 String Players when they only utilize 4 instruments. I can See them doubling up on each than having a Conductor and a Pianist. And I completely agree with you a pianist will add a whole other dimension and add a couple of other songs they could attempt to play Live:

Available Light

Second Nature

The Garden

However, I think Geddy could just trigger it too. I'm open to the Pianist idea though.

Well, first off...Rush hasn't had a "hit" in like...forever. If you are waiting for another "Tom Sawyer"...then you might be waiting a long time.

Rush is not a "classic rock" band. They are not stuck in the past...they are changing, evolving and progressing.

If you want a "classic rock" band go listen to Boston.

Secondly, they will be out on tour promoting CA. The Garden from that album is very strong and a song the guys have all said they really enjoy.

So yes, it is a MUST play.

No, i'm not expecting another "Tom Sawyer" anytime soon and yes, Rush is always moving forward, but it doesn't change the fact that they are a classic rock band.

Yeah have Ged or Alex trigger it from their bass pedals. Seems like the easiest way to go. yes.gif

The only thing they have to do is play what they want.

The only reason they are considered a classic rock band, is 'cause they began their trek back in 1974. However, they have never sounded like a classic rock band. The only songs IMO that sound like classic rock are Fly by Night and Closer to the Heart. Everything everything else sounds metal. They have always sounded different or like "RUSH", besides they change their style or sound from album to album to album.

If he could pull it off it would be quite something...that is a very nuanced, very emotive vibe. After listening it again and again, I wish it would be longer in concert. I'm thinking he could bring something new to it...while nailing the original tone!!!
