I wouldn't listen to a Justin Bieber song if you paid me.

I own all 20 studio albums.

But since I don't think Rush is "metal," that makes me a Bieber fan?

angry.gif

When I think metal, I think incoherent screaming and dark, angry lyrics, nothing like Neil's writing and Geddy's singing.

Go do some research on what Heavy metal is before you say anything because what you're describing is only some genres of metal.

Rush is definitely heavy metal.

There may be metal fans who find elements of their music in some of Rush's work, in particular their earlier stuff, but that doesn't make Rush metal.

There's too much Rush material that isn't anywhere near "metal" at all. And that's where the metal fans slip away.

Rock, hard rock, prog rock... but not metal.

How about the material that makes the Prog or hard rock fans slip away? Do the metal fans come back? Lol

They're a diverse band for sure but they're definitely part of the heavy metal genre!

Metal is like Metallica, 5FDP, etc

Rush is Heavy Progressive Intelligent Rock.

In fact, they have their own genre known as RUSH (Rock Unburdened with Society's Hokum).

POW metal?

HYF Metal?

Presto Metal?

Signals Metal?

Really now? !Just sayin'

Mick

Pretty easy to list non-metal stuff.

If you were arguing The Scorpions I'm sure you would have mentioned "Holiday".

Now go listen to "Natural Science" and adjust that attitude mister!

I was just pointing to the fact that to label Rush an all around metal band is.....kinda pushing it.

Just my humble opinion. wink.gif

It's not, it's Prog Rock............okay so what other bands do you consider "heavy metal"?

It's not prog, prog is Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Van Der Graaf Generator, King Crimson, Pink Floyd et al. You don't think Rush sound like these bands do you? Rush is much more heavy riff based.

I agree Rush is heavier and always has been..............and I would not put them with those bands.........Rush is on the top end of the genre, in fact they alone could be called Progressive Rock(they really own the genre), but unlike bands like Dream Theater, Redemption, and Symphony X, I would not call them Progressive Metal..........

Those guys are Prog Metal.

No. Rush isn't. A few traces of it in their roots when they were still emulating the bands and performers that influenced them does not make Rush heavy metal. Nothing since their first few albums comes anywhere near "heavy metal."

A band I'd consider heavy metal is Disturbed. I like some of their stuff, not all of it. Rush ain't that.

Hahaha, exactly what I was thinking. Like if you are going to cite a band like "Korn" as "metal" you really aren't setting up your case very well!

I know what heavy metal isn't. Rush isn't.

And for what it's worth - a look at iTunes - all 20 studio albums, classified as "Rock."

Disturbed's "The Sickness" is given the genre of "Metal." As is Rob Zombie.

Sure, the iTunes genre categories aren't always accurate, but it is what it is.

And I didn't mention "Korn."

I would consider Disturbed, Sevendust, Korn, and Slipknot all metal. Scorpions are considered metal and I think they are simply rock.

Rush is not metal. no.gif They are too tame, IMO.

Name:

Lori

Age:

24

Nice outfit, is that comfortable for cycling?

Let's just say the airflow is.... ahhhhhhhhhh titilating.

So thanks for talking to us today. What qualifies you to speak to what genre of music Rush would fall into?

My pleasure. I have a PhD in Music History from Yale University. Also my older brother started getting me into Rush when I was 12. It all started with Exit Stage Left...

So as a scholar, what do you answer when people ask you "are Rush heavy metal?".

Well first off Anthem, Cygnus X1 and 2112 are obviously country songs right? Joking! Rush has obviously had a long and storied musical career and have progressed wildly over the past four decades. Certainly, especially in the first half of their career they would strongly be considered heavy metal and then progressive metal. As a matter of fact several of my colleagues have researched and presented such facts in a myriad of books and documentaries. Do people still read?

So what do you say to those that insist that Rush is not metal?

Maybe these people were born in the 90s and have limited exposure to genres of music? With all the kids nowadays listening to rap influenced mallcore , it might be very hard to grasp what was considered metal back in the late '60s and early '70s, when heavy metal was truly born. The next generation will probably argue that Black Sabbath and Slayer are not metal, just because they never set off atomic weaponry at concerts and didn't shoot dead babies out of cannons like future bands will probably do. Kids nowadays...

Tell us something about yourself that not many people know.

I may seem very confident but I have a couple weird phobias actually. I always feel like someone is following me and I am also terrified of large reptiles.

Favorite Rush experience?

Ask me again in 11 minutes. Let's head to your car and listen to The Garden first. Rowwwr.
