- Sam Dunn's documentary "A Headbanger's Journey" that I'm sure most of you have seen
- Ian Christie's BIBLE on heavy metal history "Sound of the Beast" one of the better books I have read in years http://www.soundofthebeast.com/
- The bible on prog metal "Mean Deviation" by Jeff Wagner that I am currently reading, a fascinating read by the way and even features a photo of Rush on the back cover and has each section of the book itself titled from Rush lyrics... http://www.bazillionpoints.com/progress/

~40 years of existence, not every track needs to sound heavier than Deicide just to be metal.

I always considered Rush to be hard progressive rock.

Metal always seemed much more predictable, staid & formulaic to me.....but as I get older I encounter people describing all sorts of bands as metal these days, having a guitar is enough for some.

Opinions & POV's.

It would be a very boring place if we all thought the same so what's the harm in differing on this?

I can see where some would consider Rush metal.

I would say the first 6 albums are metal and Prog, PeW to RTB are hard rock and Prog and everything from CP to CA are metal and Prog.

That make any sense?

Never were, never will be.....................but definitely influenced many metal bands.........still Rush was and is Progressive Rock..........sure there are overlaps as with any genre.........the only word I would add if any would be Technical Progressive Rock......

Ok well if people won't accept that all the myriad of heavy metal historians that certainly consider at least early Rush work to be metal, metal, METAL. Then here is another bit of evidence.

Neil himself came to me in a dream last night to discuss this and he considers much of the early Rush to fall into the metal genre.

He showed me an interesting tidbit from Clockwork Angels. They certainly wanted to do at least one track as a throwback to their early metal endeavors. He pulled out the original handwritten lyrics for one of tracks and showed me what the original working title was. Showed me how:

Headbang Flight

Eventually got title tweaked to:

Headlong Flight

Because Geddy wanted something a little more subtle. They both agreed that this was a great title, a little subtle homage to one of their early metal tracks Cygnus-X1.

"Headlong into mystery..."

Sorry naysayers, but that came straight from Neil's nocturnal doppelganger. Crazy dreams last night I need to go locate a coffee.

When I think metal, I think incoherent screaming and dark, angry lyrics, nothing like Neil's writing and Geddy's singing.

edit: ....but we all know Rush is really R&B because their bass player sings.

There may be metal fans who find elements of their music in some of Rush's work, in particular their earlier stuff, but that doesn't make Rush metal.

There's too much Rush material that isn't anywhere near "metal" at all. And that's where the metal fans slip away.

Rock, hard rock, prog rock... but not metal.

POW metal?

HYF Metal?

Presto Metal?

Signals Metal?

Really now? !Just sayin'

Mick

Pretty easy to list non-metal stuff.

If you were arguing The Scorpions I'm sure you would have mentioned "Holiday".

Now go listen to "Natural Science" and adjust that attitude mister!

No. It's prog metal.

Here are some examples of metal bands: Gorgoroth, Iron Maiden, Arch Enemy, Queensryche, Nuclear Assault, Black Sabbath, Venom, Iced Earth, Cradle of Filth, Red Fang.

It's not prog, prog is Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Van Der Graaf Generator, King Crimson, Pink Floyd et al. You don't think Rush sound like these bands do you? Rush is much more heavy riff based.

I agree Rush is heavier and always has been..............and I would not put them with those bands.........Rush is on the top end of the genre, in fact they alone could be called Progressive Rock(they really own the genre), but unlike bands like Dream Theater, Redemption, and Symphony X, I would not call them Progressive Metal..........
