Need some prog recomendations

So this weekend I'm going to NEARfest in Pennsylvania and supposedly they have 2 huge dealer rooms with just about every prog album for sale that you can think of. I have a few albums that I know I'm going to pick up but I'm just wondering if anyone has any "must hear" prog albums that I should look for. I'm looking for new and old bands that aren't extremely well known since I'm familiar with Yes, King Crimson, Camel, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree etc. So don't recommend Close To The Edge. tongue.gif

Here's my last.fm page; its a fairly good representation of what I listen to.

Thanks!

Devil Doll - Dies Irae, Sacrilegium, The Girl Who Was Death, Eliogabalus, The Sacrilege of Fatal Arms
5uu's - Hunger's Teeth
X-Legged Sally - Land of Giant Dwarfs

I checked some samples for those 3 bands. Weird stuff! I liked Devil Doll the most. I'm going to listen to a couple of songs tonight and probably pick up an album.

Devil Doll is my favorite of them, my hard drive crashed recently so I'm just trying to remember what I had that I could suggest... Magma, if you've not heard them..

Alamaailman Vasarat is a really cool Finnish group

Glass Hammer's got a few good albums (The Middle Earth album, among others)

Henry Cow is good

Jacula - Tardo Pede In Magiam Versus

Steve Hillage - Fish Rising

Anything by Van der Graaf Generator is good, if you haven't heard them

I like Magma though they're kind of hard to listen to. I also really like Fish Rising and Van der Graaf Generator (they're playing at the festival - one of my all-time favorite bands). The only Glass Hammer album I've heard was Cor Cordium. Very Yes-like but still enjoyable.

I'm not familiar with Henry Cow (heard of them though), Alamaailman Vasarat, or Jacula so I have a few more bands to check out.

unsure.gif I'm going to have to spend my time at different dealers.... I have a lot of catching up to do... laugh.gif

The Laser's Edge is going to be there and I think they have like 40 feet of table space. And they're going to have a bunch of stuff on clearance. Its going to be insane.

Goodbye to the Age of Steam, the first album of Big Big Train.

I have 3 of their albums but this isn't one. Gonna look for it and get it if its cheap.

Better get to the dealer room before I do if you plan on buying everything on clearance. biggrin.gif

I think I'm going to only buy a couple of shirts and a NEARfest program and spend the rest of my money on CDs.

ETA: What 2 albums do you have?

There's only 2 bands that I'm completely unfamiliar with - Helmet of Gnats and Aranis.

What a coincidence, those five are the ones I would've chosen, but now that I've listened to them I can definitely say yes.gif

Especially Popol Vuh.

Agalloch however I've only heard very little but worth more.

Get absolutely everything by Pain of Salvation, too. Scarsick is their weakest effort.

Currently, I'm listening to Van Der Graaf Generator's Pawn Hearts. "Man-Erg" is my favorite song off the album.

I don't listen to VdGG often because they seriously depress me, but when I do, it's the most beautiful music...scratch that...adventure I could possibly embark on. And Man-Erg happens to be the most beautiful adventure on their most adventurous album.
