rushgoober Posted June 18, 2012 Share Posted June 18, 2012 (edited) Ok, if you're like me, you're reticent to give Clockwork Angels a numerical ranking as it's just way too early and you're still getting to know the album. Also, I know that opinions change too easily in the first few months after a new album. That said, there are certain albums I can safely say CA is definitely better than, others it's definitely not as good as, and still others that it might be better than. Clockwork Angels is DEFINITELY better than: Vapor Trails Test For Echo Roll The Bones Presto Clockwork Angels is DEFINITELY NOT better than: Hemispheres Signals Moving Pictures Permanent Waves Grace Under Pressure A Farewell To Kings 2112 Hold Your Fire Clockwork Angels MIGHT be better than: Rush Fly By Night Power Windows Counterparts Caress of Steel Snakes & Arrows That places the album somewhere between #9 and #15 for me. I'm pretty positive the album is at least better than S&A, so it's more realistically between #9 and #14, but I'm not ready to commit to that yet. I can't say 8 great songs off a 12-song album is automatically better than a 5-song album, or that just because it's a concept album it's better than a similarly great album that isn't a concept album. I have to take an entire album into consideration and the strength of the strong tracks when comparing apples to oranges. I can't treat it like a simple math equation. For example, I rate HYF, an album with 8 great tracks and 2 crappy tracks a LOT higher than Power Windows which has no weak tracks, simply because those 8 songs are SO strong. Also, production matters. I find it hard to compare certain songs off the new album to a lot of older, classic tracks only because so many of those older, classic tracks have a clarity and simplicity to the production and presentation of the songs that the newer ones don't have yet. Now, that said the smaller basket might have Calidornia Oranges which means they are more tasty. The question here is, is that basket with fewer tastier oranges enough to keep you from the basket with more oranges that are slightly less tasty? Regarding your orange example - The only way I don't choose the 7 or 8 tastier oranges over the 12 not as good tasting ones is if I'm watching my finances, and with Rush songs that's never an issue. I'd rather take less of a higher quality over more of a lesser quality any day of the week. I just don't think you can change it into a math equation. I think it'll end up being either fifth or sixth in my rankings, depending on the outcome of the slugfest it's currently waging with Counterparts. I don't believe it'll move ahead of CoS, MP, Signals, or PeW, or fall behind anything else, but we'll see. But my rose-tinted glasses of love are probably clouding my eyesight, because... Right now, I'd rank it third behind only Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves. So to answer the question, it's not better than PeW and MP but is better than all the others!! (How deluded am I? How much will my opinion change after the honeymoon is over?)
