There are two different ways to look at this thread. It depends on what question you are asking...

What is the best song of all the album closers?

OR

Which song is the best closer to their respective album?

If we're just referring to the best song on this list, I'd probably be looking at La Villa Strangiato or Natural Science.

If we're looking at which song best closes out its album, then I'm looking at Available Light.

Ditto OOOC.

Some strong candidates on this list, I love Available Light and In The End. Countdown is a CLASSIC ending to an album.

I'm going to have to think it over some more before I vote, but I think you're on to something here. The Garden really moves me. yes.gif

Actually, I'd argue that overall, their closers (especially in the later years) haven't been all that strong...at least not in my rankings.

We Hold On - bottom 3 on S&A

Out Of The Cradle - bottom 3 on VT

Carve Away The Stone - bottom 2 on TFE

Everyday Glory - bottom 3 on CP

You Bet Your Life - bottom 3 on RTB

High Water - bottom 2 on HYF

I also failed to mention "Mystic Rhythms"...I liked that as a closer.

And yes, I went ahead and made it official and voted The Garden.

I tend to go for ending the album with a bang. The Garden ends Clockwork Angels with a sigh. It's perfect.

But... for me I would say the best closer is Natural Science, with La Villa as a close second although I think Clockwork Angels may be better than either of those albums overall. That's probably just the newness speaking, but I freakin' love this record.

Very bold for you to say, my friend! Natural Science is very difficult to beat!

Bold nuttin, it's just a fat guy's opinion. I've been in awe of Rush since I was in 5th grade and the new kid in school brought in Exit Stage Left. That was in 1981 just after it came out. I've worshiped at the alter of Rush (musically speaking) ever since. No one has ever moved me, awed me, destroyed me, the way Rush does and they always have, without fail.

I can honestly say that I have never been as impressed with a record on the first few listens as I am with Clockwork Angels. I expect to come back to Earth at some point, but I'm not sure I want to. I suspect that this record is as close to perfect as anyone is ever going to get.

I would consider Natural Science to be in my top 5, but I wasn't blown away by the studio version of the song.

Now the LIVE version on the other hand........ drool1.gif

I voted for Natural Science, but I'm somewhat surprised there are no votes (so far) for Working Man.

Probably because it's overplayed so much...Not by Rush. But the community itself.. wacko.gif

The best actual song to close an album (composition wise) may very well be Natural Science, however, in context of the "concept" and the fact that it was to be continued...I had to vote for Cygnus X-1.

The songs in the middle shift around, but it's more-or-less:
  1. La Villa Strangiato
  2. Mystic Rhythms
  3. Natural Science
  4. Between the Wheels
  5. Something for Nothing
  6. Vital Signs
  7. Working Man
  8. We Hold On
  9. The Fountain of Lamneth ***
  10. Cygnus X-1
  11. Available Light
  12. The Garden
  13. Carve Away the Stone
  14. Everyday Glory
  15. High Water
  16. In the End
  17. Countdown
  18. Out of the Cradle
  19. You Bet Your Life
*** = Note that COS' original track order didn't have the entire epic as the album closer

As great as album-closing Rush songs tend to be, and as much as I love Working Man, La Villa, Natural Science, Vital Signs, Mystic Rhythms, and Everyday Glory, I think The Garden tops them all.

It touches deep emotions that no other Rush song ever has.

What do you think?

I agree. There is something going on with this song that affects me like few i have ever heard.

I think La Villa is a better song, but as a closer, The Garden really ties the album together nicely...and best.
