The Wreckers

The Lyrics for "THE WRECKERS" are really descriptive. They really paint a picture and tell the story like those of:

Red Barchetta, Countdown, Red Sector A, Losing It,

THE WRECKERS"

The breakers roar on an unseen shore

In the teeth of a hurricane

We struggle in vain

A hellish night - a ghostly light

Appears trough the driving rain

Salvation in human chain

All I know is that sometimes you have to be wary

Of a miracle too good to be true

All I know is that sometimes the truth is contrary

Everything in life you thought you knew

All I know is that sometimes you have to be wary

'Cause sometimes the target is you

Driven aground, with that awful sound

Drowned by the cheer from ashore

We wonder what for

The people swarm through the darkling storm

Gather everything the can score

'Til their backs won't bear any more

The breakers roar on an unseen shore

In the teeth of an icy grave

The human chain leaves a bloody stain

Washed away in the pounding waves

All I know is that memory can be too much to carry

Striking down like a bolt from the blue

What's your take?

I was thinking the same thing. Not only does it paint a beautiful picture, but the music matches perfectly. You can feel the hero's despair. They really knocked it out of the park.

I agree! In fact, that's where this entire album shines, to me. It feels so cinematic!

To quote Simple Jack, it's like "head movies. But this head movie makes my eyes rain!" wink.gif

I remember reading that Neil was partially inspired by Jamaica Inn, and I can't get the image of the old Hitchcock film out of my head when I listen. I am sure he was inspired by the novel the movie was based on, but I still see that old b/w footage when I listen knowing that was part of his inspiration.

The Wreckers is such a beautiful song. The chorus gets me everytime, I love how Geddy sings it. Such great lyrics and awesome music, I am so in love with this album!

Questions on lyrics.

In the teeth of a hurricane

We struggle in vain

A hellish night - a ghostly light

Appears trough the driving rain

Salvation in human chain

I first I thought it was a typo and should be "tough" but it's definately "tRough".

I didn't think that fit with my definition, you know a long narrow box structure used for watering horses. I suppose it could but the usage is a bit odd.

So I looked and saw this,

Trough (meteorology) wiki

A trough is an elongated region of relatively low atmospheric pressure, often associated with fronts.  (more at link)

Types of trough

In addition to standard troughs, some may be described further with a qualifying term indicating a specific or a set of characteristics

Lee trough

A "lee trough" is one and the same thing as a "dynamic trough". According to the AMS Glossary, it is "A pressure trough formed on the lee side of a mountain range in situations where the wind is blowing with a substantial component across the mountain ridge; often seen on United States weather maps east of the Rocky Mountains, and sometimes east of the Appalachians, where it is less pronounced.", and can be formed either as a result of the adiabatic compression of sinking air on the "lee" side of a mountain range, or through cyclogenesis resulting from "the horizontal convergence associated with vertical stretching of air columns passing over the ridge and descending the lee slope."[7][8]

Inverted trough

An inverted trough is an atmospheric trough which is oriented opposite to most troughs of the mid-latitudes. Most (but not all) inverted troughs are tropical waves (also commonly called easterly waves).

Most troughs of low pressure in the mid-latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere are characterized by decreasing atmospheric pressure from south to north while inverted troughs are characterized by decreasing pressure from north to south. The situation is opposite in the Southern Hemisphere. Inverted troughs in both hemispheres move to the west from the east, while mid-latitude troughs generally move with the westerlies toward the east.

All troughs may be at the surface, or aloft, or both under various conditions. Most troughs bring clouds, showers, and a wind shift, particularly following the passage of the trough. This results from convergence or "squeezing" which forces lifting of moist air behind the trough line.

So I think he is definately refering to the meteorological term, and leave it to Neil to actually use an odd term like that.

And then in the same verse...

The breakers roar on an unseen shore

In the teeth of a hurricane

We struggle in vain

A hellish night - a ghostly light

Appears trough the driving rain

Salvation in human chain

Okay, a human chain is a political statement of people holding hands in defiance, or protest.

The breakers appear like a human chain? The people on the shore? How do you get salvation from a "human chain"?

Thoughts?

Dude you are way too politically oriented! biggrin.gif

They are holding on to each other to keep people from getting swept away.

pretty sure it's a typo and it should be "through" not "tough"

duh.....

In my insert it definitely says through.

Luckily Reb doesn't over-analyze stuff... could make for long winded posts laugh.gif
