physics23
From eitb24.com: Live-8: Pink Floyd donates profits, urges others do the same Their album sales have shot up since Live 8 concert, with fans rushing to buy copies of the band's greatest hits album 'Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd'. Pink Floyd have pledged to donate all profits made as a result of their performance at last weekend's Live 8 concert to charity, and urged other acts to do the same. Sales for fellow Live 8 performers The Who and Annie Lennox also registered massive increases. Every act who played at Hyde Park on Saturday has seen a sales boost for their material - except for Pete Doherty. The legendary band reformed especially for the gig, after more than 20 years of hostility. Their album sales have shot up since, with fans rushing to buy copies of the band's greatest hits album 'Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd.' Sales are up 1,343% at HMV, but guitarist David Gilmour said he would not profit from the smash hit show. [More]

SheriffJohnBrown
I'm familiar with all Floyd - in fact I own all their albums - and it ain't out of ignorance that I say "I find Piper to Ummagumma to be utter crap." My favorite era is definitely the "popular" era of Meddle to The Wall. My favorite album, although not the best work in my opinion, is Animals. I enjoy TFC and the Gilmour Floyd (especially The Division Bell) as well...

Yeah, wow, I was pretty shocked when I read that myself. So there's at least one other opinion to the contrary out there, let me say that the 1967-1969 period of Pink Floyd Sherriff is referring to is pure MAGIC in my opinion. In psychedelic music circles, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is always in the top 3 of the best psychedelic albums of all time, not to mention one of the most influential, and it is a work of pure brilliance imho. 1968's A Saucerful of Secrets was a brilliant follow-up, especially considering their main creative force Syd Barrett had only a very limited presence and most of all it featured David Gilmour instead. 1969's Ummagumma is one live album (great) and one studio album (also great, but very experimental, and it won't appeal to everyone). I'm also a huge fan of Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall, but really it's their 1967-1973 period as a whole that does it for me the most. Anything post-Wall is of very little interest to me. Anyway, that 1967-1969 is FAR from crap imho - pure genius is more like it. Hatchetaxe&saw
Piper at the Gates of Dawn is up there with Forever Changes, 12 dreams of Dr Sardonicus, Surrealistic Pillow, a pure psychedelic classic. Piper is not far behind. More, the lost classic in my book. But still my favourite remains, The Final Cut. I love them all, bar momentary Lapse and Divison Bell, which are average, but there is something about The Final Cut that does it for me.

Mind you it is a very depressing album and not one to play at a rousing party but it is excellent for those times to relax and mellow out and for some introspective thinking as well... Arndrake
The local classic rock station (apparently the only one in Seattle) just released a report about a tentative U.S. tour in '06 of Floyd reunited with Watters. That's why I noted, as the radio station did, that it was tentative. Could have been just a rumor the DJ picked up off the net. But I can always hope, as I'm sure most of us are. softfilter
A few Floyd related questions and random remarks. The solo stuff, Roger Waters I have The Pros And Cons Of Hitch Hiking. I find ambitious yet slow and muddled. RADIO K.A.O.S. much better interesting concept.(Cool during this tour to support this album had a request booth in crowd to talk and place request DJ Jim Ladd on stage) Cleveland show and I'm sure every other stop someone asked wheres Syd ? I know there was a RADIO K.A.O.S ll never heard any reviews about it. Other Waters album"What God wants" I heard sucked. I know theres probably more anyone have any suggestions? His Wall production in Berlin never got around to buying (Worth It?) I have first Gilmour on cassette and About Face on vinyl both very good. Also still have on video tape Gilmour MTV special concert during About Face, At the start of this shows David sitting in front of tv remote in hand watching THE WALL movie frown on face Then turns tv off! Any other Gilmour solo stuff I should up date to ? Have all of FLOYD up to Delicate Sound of Thunder. No longer seemed like a band to me more like a orchestra.
