Ged says they took great care to make sure that, even though it is a concept album, the songs can also stand on their own individually.

did the DJ really said that CA was the first Rush's concept album? If so i think he is wrong...

where the full album is a concept

They had concept songs (2112, Hemispheres). They've never had a concept album.

A FULL album concept has never been done by the band.

I think you could argue that RTB is a concept album.

That would have to be a VERY convincing argument...I've never even heard that theory before

Quick Hits so far (please correct anything I got wrong)...

- Award in Canada last week was nice...lots of food and booze

- Liked the children's choir rendition of The Spirit of Radio

- Seemed ambivalent about RRHOF (even though it wasn't mentioned by name)...artists appreciate the recognition, but...

- Thinks the young Japanese girl that plays YYZ solo on a piano/synth is amazing

- CA is definitely a concept album built around a central story, but the 12 (yes 12, not 14) songs are specifically designed to stand alone...no recurring musical themes/passages a la 2112 or Hemispheres.

- Basic story is a young boy/man with a naive "the world is a good place" view of the world who ventures out into that world. Reality is different and how his naive world view evolves in the face of that reality is a central concept.

- Prog is a confusing epithet..to them it basically means "that we overreach".

- Complex music akin to the complex machinery of a steampunk world.

I'm sure I missed a bunch and got much of the above wrong...

All the songs deal with chance.

The theme of luck runs a thread through the entire album, but the idea of a "concept album" ends there.

I would argue that Roll The Bones and Counterparts are thematic. "Concept" is stretching it a little.

Well, yes.

In a sense, most Rush albums have a lyrical theme of some kind (TFE is all about communication, PoW is about power, etc).

But...when I think Concept Album, I'm thinking something like 'Operation: Mindcrime' from Queensryche. Just my opinion though.

Yeah, that's how I feel.
