Rushman14
x1yyz, U2 doesn't get any mention here, but I like them a lot too. Can still remember where I was the very first time I heard a song by them in the late seventies. I had them as a "AA" band, which is high praise from me actually (it's a measure of my taste, not an attempt at objectivity, obviously). I was a huge fan through Unforgettable Fire. And then they became the Biggest Band on the Planet and I shied away, but they won me back eventually. They're too good to ignore.I loved U2 for the entire 1980s. And I love Achtung Baby. After that, they seemed like a band on cruise control. Apart from a few exceptions, U2 sounds the same on EVERY DAMN song. And I can't stand the hype before each new album claiming they're going reclaim the crown of "biggest band in the world." same here. each subsequent album after Achtung Baby would have maybe 4 or 5 songs I really liked, but the rest was boring. Rutlefan
^ Yes. I'd put it at about 3-4 songs, typically. Let's see... Zooropa/Lemon/The Wanderer...3; If God Will Send His Angels/Staring at the Sun/Last Night on Earth/Wake Up Dead Man...4; etc. Yup. That said though, when they're good, I think they're very very good. bluefox4000
My lists are pretty much set in stone...........BUT Right now my number 1 band is Steely Dan. The first run of albums from 72-80 is one of the greatest runs any band ever had, IMO. Mick

Paramore is an exception, only because they're growing up and it shows in the music. I still wouldn't be a fan if it weren't for their last album. That self-titled disc was my favorite album last year, and it helped me "get" their older stuff and appreciate their progression as a band. I am a massive fan of nineties emo, and that genre has its roots in hardcore. Jimmy belong to that era, with commercial influences. Paramore to me are beyond the limitations of pop punk as well. Segue Myles
Ok, I have a new addition to my list, but I will keep this list tight with only five: 1. Lacuna Coil- why? Sentimental reasons. In many ways I have outgrown these Italian legends, but I cannot deny that my tastes today all stem from this band, who create music that seems at first ordinary, and then after a while you slowly realise that no one else like them exists. Top albums? Karmacode, Broken Crown Halo and Comalies. 2. Rush- no explanation needed here to explain why they are great, but prior to Rush prog seemed a distant, but attractive, artistic form. Sure, a lot of bands I liked in the past had prog elements (Opeth, Mastodon, The Human Abstract), but Rush made the genre firmly top of my list. Plus, I can think of no other band as talented as Rush, and who released as many classic albums over such a long career. Top albums: Moving Pictures, A Farewell To Kings, Caress Of Steel 3. The Beatles- confession: I used to hate this band, until the day I bought the Red and Blue albums out of curiosity and payed close attention. My choice for greatest band of all time, it may seem odd I put them third. So why did I? Because my top three is incredibly tight, and sometimes I allow myself to make mistakes! Top albums: Too many, but Revolver, Abbey Road and Help! are three albums that made me a firm Beatles fan. 4. Yes- so this is the new addition! For a few years now I have been resisting the urge to listen to Yes because, to be honest, I knew I wasn't ready to appreciate them just yet. After all, I was still learning about Rush and that was more than enough to satisfy me! But as soon as I played Tales From Topographic Oceans last year I was hooked, for the time being mainly just because I loved that album. Why Tales? Because it felt oddly familiar to some of my favourite jazz albums, and because off the offbeat melodies and absolutely alien sounds coming from the group as a whole. I still think it is my favourite Yes album, but from 1969-1980, those albums are completely blowing me away. For the first time as well! Top albums: Tales, Relayer and Yes (at this moment in time). 5. Toto- I always feel like I need to defend this choice. To be honest, my fifth choice could be any number of bands (or even artists, but I am sticking to groups so Springsteen is out of the equation), but Toto have released four albums I deem masterful: Fahrenheit, Isolation, Tambu and the self-titled debut. I suffer from depression, and so to counteract much of my more demanding tastes (I count classical and jazz as well), I also need lighter stuff. Yes, metal, classic rock, jazz and punk shares shelf space with many lighter forms of music: aside from Toto I also love ABBA, 80's Madonna, No Doubt, Paramore and Michael Jackson. But Toto are on another level. Even if I doubt they had the panache to create epic rock on the scale of Yes or Rush, collectively the talents of each individual member has always been exemplary, and I think even Toto's most ardent detractors cannot deny the wonders of Lukather, Porcaro, Williams etc. But the closest they ever got to prog, Hydra, stands as one of the worst albums in my collection, even if i know it has its loyal fans. So for me, when it comes to pure pop hooks, only ABBA bettered them as far as I am concerned! They may not always be the most convincing rockers, but Toto deserve their place on this list. Oh Toto, how I love thee! Kisses to all you do! Top albums: Fahrenheit, Tambu, Isolation. I don't think I need to add anything more, my list of favourite bands is always on show! Mick LC are one of those niche bands that you enjoy more if you like that style. A bit like Yes or King Crimson. How many fans of those bands dislike prog as a genre? Toto are just the musical equivalent of cotton candy. If you do not like them you are a FREAK. (Ok, a bit harsh...but then again i am not one to deny the truth to those whom it is owing).
