Lame first episode. Not enough Smith, not enough comic talk. Looks like the show is setup like Pawn Stars only for the comic/collectible crowd-- except Pawn Stars has lots of interesting things on the show and the people in it are much more amusing.

Not enough Smith was the best part! I don't understand the adoration for such a hack.

As for the show, nothing impressive or entertaining.

It was only the first episode so i wouldn't be too critical of it yet. Sometimes a show needs a little bit to find it's groove. I didn't think it was too bad and don't mind that it had a pawn star kind of feel in some spots. Talking about comics the whole hour would doom the show because there's a lot of people who would have no clue what they're talking about. Having some pawn star like elements will help to bring in a bigger audience I think.

I like the show to but to be honest, they don't really give you much to talk about with each episode. You just watch it, have some fun for an hour and then move on.

A hack director huh? Tell me what jokes and movie ideas he's stolen from somebody else?

You're kidding, right? What was that last crappy movie he directed before his attempt at a horror film? The one with Bruce Willis - there ya go.

And

is as lame and uninspired as they come.

Well, I haven't seen that horror movie he did so you'll have to come up with a better example than that. The link to Jay's rap you posted doesn't really prove anything to me. That scene fits Jay's character perfectly actually. Plus, it's not meant to be taken seriously at all. I like everything Smith did from Clerks through Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. I think Clerks 2 is good to but I don't think he's the greastest writer and director ever or some kind of movie god like some of his fans do.

The jokes have been done to death. The rap, the don't diss on a band no one likes, the whole Silent Bob deal, it's all hack work.

By saying he's a hack director I'm not saying he stole ideas or jokes, I'm saying he's a shitty filmmaker! Jay and Silent Bob were alright in Clerks and that's it. They are tired and stale now. As for his films- Jersey Girl, Cop Out, Whoever and Whoever Make a Porno etc, absolute shit! I find him just irritating as a person in general. new_thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

as for comic book men, there's more to the show than smith. i like walt and bryan a lot. especially bryan, in fact. a lot of fun and reminds me so much of my friend who passed away last year.

that dvd was a special where he went to cities and did Q&A's with fans. not an actual film of his.

and i don't understand the need for people to come in here to bash Kevin's directing skills. I'm pretty sure we were talking about the show...

Is Smith a great director? Hardly. But Clerks and Chasing Amy are 2 very good movies. His other Jay and Bob-related comedies upto Clerks 2 are all average or better. Haven't seen any of his work since.

As for the show, it has improved. Each episode's schtick (zombie makeup, hockey game, Jay visiting, etc.) aren't completely welcome, but not too bad. Smith not having much of an onscreen presence is not noticed so much thanks to Bryan Johnson, the big, bearded, non-employee. Didn't realize he was 'anyone' until someone in one episode mentioned that he was the director of the underrated cult classic movie Vulgar. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120467/ (And if you don't like Smith's movies then you probably won't like Johnson's either)

I'd still like more comic-talk. History, making of, people of note, etc. Might not be as entertaining but I'd prefer that to them trying to sell crap at a swap meet.

I'd say under any circumstance, a 100% on RT does good for one's reputation

Look at the sample size! Sheesh.

A total of five critic reviews. All positive. Five!

As for the 89% audience rating, well, Mr. Smith does have his fanboys.

I watched the last episode of Comic Book Men and it still leaves me feeling how derivative the idea is. I will say this, it's not bad. And Kevin Smith's popularity still baffles me. I just don't find him funny or insightful or appealing, in anyway.
