Well, if you're talking ambient:

Ben Frost

Tim Hecker

Stars of the Lid

Eluvium

Olafur Arnalds

Brian Eno

Electronic can range from anything for me. Venetian Snares and Boards of Canada would be the only artists that I would label as "electronic".

^ of the 28 artists mentioned above, all but eight of them take up extensive shelf space in my collection (they probably make up about 200 CD's and LP's)

if you looked no further than this list, you'd have a lifetime's worth of music to discover

one of my favorite things about the ambient genre specifically is the lack of album 'burn out' - unlike rock, pop (hell, any rhythm-based structured music), I can listen to ambient albums dozens of times over a short span of time and never tire of them

I've only ever heard of Brian Eno and Tangerine Dream from this list. Also, wasn't Tangerine Dream responsible for the TV theme for Street Hawk, sometime in the 80s? (If this is the same band)

Just found this. One of the most minimalistic pieces I've heard:

...i would love to know other people's fave albums from this/these genres..

well, you've already listed six 'essentials' user posted image :

QUOTE (rushgoober @ Dec 30 2011, 11:32 PM)
Tangerine Dream - Electronic Meditation
Pete Namlook & Bill Laswell - Psychonavigation
Future Sound of London - Lifeforms
Bill Laswell - Outer Dark
Robert Rich - Propogation
Tangerine Dream - Phaedra

^ although none of those would make my 'Top 10 List', every one is brilliant and a must-have

that's one thing that's always impressed me about ambient music - the uncommonly high quality ratio, especially when weighed against how vast the genre is

now - your list takes some liberties (appropriate ones, in my opinion) with the definition of 'ambient' - mine does as well

so - my top four? subject to change, but for the last five years or so:

Robert Rich & Alio Die - Fissures (perfect, 100%)

Robert Rich & Lisa Moscow - Yearning (perfect, 100%)

Possession + African Dub - Off World One (perfect, 100%)

Talk Talk - Laughing Stock (perfect, 100%)

and a half-dozen near-perfect contenders:

Cypher 7 - Decoder

Michael Brook - Cobalt Blue

Stars Of The Lid & Jon McCafferty - Per Aspera Ad Astra

Bill Laswell - Silent Recoil (Dub System One)

Eno, Lanois, Eno - Apollo

Haruomi Hosono - N.D.E.

finally, three with so much going for them, they required specific mention:

Manna - 5.1

Djivan Gasparyan & Michael Brook - Black Rock

Death Cube K (Buckethead) - Dreamatorium

^ of course, I'd be happy to talk at length about any of those albums... wink.gif

Cool man, thanks for posting that! trink39.gif

I'll have to check out some of those titles - the only one I have is Apollo and Cobalt Blue (both excellent).

Let me add in two titles that aren't proper ambient, but they're close:

Cocteau Twins - Victorialand

Coctewau Twins with Harold Budd - The Moon and the Melodies

And regarding the Ambient series, the only one I have is Isolationism. Ironically, I sold that recently on ebay (but of course I kept a burned copy!). Someday we really will have to do a CDR trade.
