treeduck
http://i.imgur.com/TnSEB.jpg I hadn't seen this before, but it was an excellent film! The best and most original film I've seen in a while, with yet another virtuoso performance from Willem Dafoe... I'd like to have a look at the sequel. I've heard it's not as good, so I'll go in with lower expectations than I would have otherwise after seeing the first one. treeduck
http://www.moviegoods.com//Assets/product_images/1020/429825.1020.A.jpg http://www.moviegoods.com//Assets/product_images/1020/252493.1020.A.jpg At last a film about some genuine Wreckers! This was a weird one, a cross between a Disney version of Treasure Island and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Pirates, a lighthouse, monkeys, rams, an island, murder, torture, death! The wreckers! The pirates are led by Yul Brynner at his most charismatically evil, Kirk Douglas plays the one surviving lighthouse keeper. It's a bit bizarre though, with exotic sheep being hunted by Kirk, a monkey being disemboweled by a fat boy pirate, Samantha Edgar sitting down to civilized chat and tea with Yul, Kirk chortling and laughing like he wasn't being hunted round an island by maniac pirates, random slaughter and rape, men thrown off the lighthouse, pirates wearing dresses, viking-style funerals, curious cannon ball firing practice, and a guy getting the skin of his chest ripped off! Like I said it's a weird one!

Haven't seen Blade Runner for ages! Yeah that's a non-Hammer version of Dracula from 1970. It's very faithful to the novel. It features Christopher Lee as Dracula once again, Herbert Lom as Van Helsing and Klaus Kinski as Renfield. All are good in this. I found it a bit dull though to be honest and it was hilariously bad in places, with silly camera zooms, plastic bats on wires, wolves that looked like stray mutts let loose from the dog pound looking for scraps, ludicrous blood splatter effects right out of a horror spoof, a stuffed animal scene that just made me laugh out loud and some really terrible pantomime vampire acting from some of the unknowns. It's a bit confusing with all the Hammer Dracula films featuring Lee produced around the same time, but no this one isn't a Hammer film, it's an Italian production filmed in Spain. Most of the actors are Spanish or Italian and they seem to have been dubbed. Only Lee and Lom speak with their own voices, maybe a couple of other actors too. Kinski has no lines. It didn't have the gothic atmosphere most Hammer films have, and the locations were weird, meeting with Britain's Home Secretary in London in what looked like a Turkish castle for instance... Without the performances of Lee, Lom and Kinski this would not be worth bothering with, unless you're a fan of the director, Jess Franco, who has something of a cult following...
