REM is one of my favorite bands of all time. Document is an incredble album.

Their later stuff wasn't as good, but there are some gems in there (Crush with Eyeliner, Bad Day).

I say a sincere thank you to a great American rock band. Cheers, gentlemen.

It's quite hard to understand all the hate that brings their split... sad.gif

Their bass player always knew what to play to make the song work. Totally underrated player. That being said, I loved them until I heard Shiny Happy People...still hate that song. They had some great moments after that, but from 83 to 87 I loved it. To be honest, I thought they broke up at least 10 years ago...

Jeez didn't realize so many people here despised R.E.M.

I love 'em to death, they're a top 5 of all-time band for me.

Too bad I thought their latest album was mostly boring but still, all of their albums have something great to offer.

The ones talking only about the hits (Stand, Shiny Happy People, Everybody Hurts) etc. are missing out on some wonderful work.

I'd honestly consider their peak years to be 1982-1996.

When Bill Berry left they definitely lost something in the sound, and Berry was a great lyricist as well.

That being said I still do enjoy the rest of their albums post-1996.

This is sad for me, I was hoping to see them live and maybe get a couple more albums / compilations.

Oh well, they've given their (amazing) share of music over the years.

I'll miss 'em for sure.

R.E.M.'s masterpieces: Murmur and Automatic for the People.

R.E.M.'s near masterpieces: Reckoning, Lifes Rich Pageant and Document.

R.E.M.'s great albums: Fables of the Reconstruction and Out of Time

R.E.M.'s very good albums: New Adventures in Hi-Fi, Green and Up

R.E.M.'s good albums: Monster and Accelerate

R.E.M.'s okay albums: Reveal, Around the Sun and Collapse into Now

All in all, a great run of albums. Most of it is great, the rest merely good.

I'll miss them, for sure.

Yeah...you have it ranked real nice. I might put "Life's Rich Pageant" up on the top shelf with "Automatic for the People," but it's well represented.

When I was younger...I didn't talk about my affinity for R.E.M. because I thought they were...for another kind of person. I liked things heavier, and I thought it was a little soft. I had tons of stuff I liked that I kept like that. XTC, Robyn Hitchcock, Nick Drake. I embraced it later. I haven't listened to R.E.M. in a while though. They were really great.

I read not too long ago that Cliff Burton was a huge fan in a book called "To Live is to Die." I thought it was cool that he liked them.

Anyway, they'd been around a long time.

I suppose they had only a few ok/catchy songs -

Losing My Religion

Shiny Happy People

Man on the Moon

Everybody Hurts

nothing really to remember them as the stuff of legends

It was onthe bbc nes this morning and there was 2 slips of them playing, only 10 sec long byt looked completely boring and uninspired.

the woman newreader says she saw them live and they were brilliant, from what iv seen they are mediocre live.

I wish the woman had seen Rush to see what a real gig is like, wonder if Rush will be mentioned on the bbc when they retire?

Well, I'll miss them. And the last album, Collapse Into Now is a fine body of work to sign off on. Great to see another TRF hatefest though....

Hah. I sometimes think the only music I have in common with Rush fans is Rush. I do prefer REM's 80s output.

Michael Stipe  062802puke_prv.gif

Why so?

It's not an uncommon reaction to entertainment stars who start taking themselves a little too seriously. Stipe is, for lack of a better term, really f***ing weird, but in his defense he has ALWAYS been that way. It's not an affectation.

If you want to hear "good" REM, you have to listen to their 80s stuff.

Check out:

Driver 8

Catapult

So. Central Rain

Fall On Me

Talk About the Passion

Superman

That's when they were making some real music and not the pop shit they made during the last 18 years.

To me, Stipe jumped the shark at the 1990 or 1991 VMAs (not sure when it was, and I'm not going to spend time looking it up) when every time "Losing My Religion" won an award he donned a t-shirt for some different left wing cause.

That's jumping the shark?
