Top ten progressive rock albums?

Recommended Posts

I've been meaning to start this thread for a while now. "Neo-prog" and the like are welcome, if you're into that kind of thing. If you can't rank the albums, alphabetize them!

I'll start:

The Dark Side of the Moon, by Pink Floyd

Fragile, by Yes

The Grand Wazoo, by Frank Zappa

Hemispheres, by Rush

I Robot, by The Alan Parsons Project

In the Court of the Crimson King, by King Crimson

Masque, by Kansas

Red, by King Crimson (again, because they deserve it)

Selling England by the Pound, by Genesis

Thick as a Brick, by Jethro Tull

Hemispheres by Rush

Genesis albums from Foxtrot to TLLDoB

Close to the Edge and TfTo by Yes

Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull

Lateralus by Tool

I forgot Lizard by KC! Replace TfTo with that

And here is some more obscure stuff I enjoy as well, a top ten (no order):

In the land of grey and pink, Caravan

Peter Hammill, the silent corner and the empty stage

A Passion Play, Jethro Tull

K.A., Magma

Scherezade and other stories, Renaissance.

Choirs of the Eye, Kayo Dot

Trespass, Genesis

Caress of Steel, Rush

Still Life, Opeth

Hybris, Anglagard

I feel bad about bumping my own thread like this, but I hadn't expected it to just fizzle out after three replies. sad.gif

It's only because variations of this have been done many times before, but it's not a subject I ever tire of. no.gif

I do agree, however, that more people need to respond! yes.gif 1287.gif

Pink Floyd - Animals

Rush - A Farewell to Kings

Yes - Tales from Topographic Oceans

Genesis - Foxtrot

Yes - Fragile

When it comes to Prog, my tastes are a bit pedestrian. Off the top of my head, in no particular order:

King Crimson - Red

Yes - Close to the Edge

Pink Floyd - Animals

Van Der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts

Rush - Hemispheres

Gentle Giant - Octopus

Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick

U.K. - U.K.

Camel - Mirage

Hmmm, I don't listen to as much Prog as I thought I did. This was tough!

The lack of anything in the last 30 or so years befuddles me. biggrin.gif

I basically was turned onto Porcupine Tree and Riverside because of this board.

I must say for the record that I've been listening to Thick as a Brick a bit lately, and it's really starting to grow on me. It's not like I didn't like it previously, I just thought it was perhaps a bit overblown and I never quite got it.

I'm starting to get it. :D

anyway, I couldnt possibly boil down all the great prog out there to a top 10 list

I can't either. I've listened to so many great prog albums since I last posted in this thread and I'm always finding new stuff.
