If you go back in time to the 1950's, you could use Eddie Van Halen to convince your father that you are Darth Vader from the planet Vulcan!!!

John Petrucci.

Well yeah, obviously he destroys both of these guys, but I think its more appropriate to compare Eddie and Alex because they are fairly similar and closer to each other in terms of ability. Neither of them can touch Petrucci though so thats not a fair comparison.

He can rip a solo and absolutely bury Alex and Eddie all day, but he also knows how to keep it simple too when it needs to be. You rarely see that in quitarists with his skill level. They usually just shred all the time but he has a lot of feeling in his playing. He has a lot of the same qualities as Alex but he's a far better technical player.

Watch this.

I clicked the link and watched all 7:18 of it. Well, watched a bit because I had to close my eyes so I wouldn't dismiss it as hair metal noodling. I kept waiting for the brilliance and didn't find it. The man is talented and technically proficient and incredibly boring. I'll always like guitarists like Alex Lifeson or Steve Howe or even Keith Richards more than guys like that or Eddie Van Halen because they have soul in their playing.

It's just my opinion and we all like what we like, but I think without soul and a little bit of blues the electric guitar sounds cold.

That's from the very early 90's, and if you cant hear feeling in there then I dont even know how to respond to that. He is a big fan of Alex, and Alex is of him, and I can hear it all throughout that solo, except that he's a better player than Alex is.

Eddie simply doesn't have the variety Lerxt has. He's truly a unique and damn good player, but he can't do anywhere near as much as Alex. Alex can't quite do what VH is best at, but VH can't do half the things Alex is just okay at smile.gif

Have to agree with this.

I pretty much detest the use of " lack of soul" or " no soul" to describe music.

2 completely different styles.

With that said, BOTH are fantastic guitarists. I can't really choose one over the other. Both are highly-skilled, and I'm sure that both influenced alot of other guitar players out there.

But if anyone suggests that either of these guys lack any sort of skill when it comes to guitar playing, well...that's ludicrous.

I really don't think Eddie has anything on Mr. Lifeson in terms of skill that I've heard (except possibly speed which is debatable). Who do I prefer? Alex by miles. I could list 20 guitarists I like more easily before even considering EVH.

Alex's versatility alone trumps anything I hear in Eddie's playing, not to mention Al's songwriting and musical depth. Eddie certainly came up with his fair share of great riffs but my feeling is that too many of his solos aren't as well constructed and as memorable as what Lifeson does, adding little to Van Halen's songs except sheer technique. Everyone likes to mention how influential Eddie is but I would question if it was such a positive influence in the long run.

It's ok Ways! You know I don't care about hijacking!

Heck I would love to see that list of 20 as well!

BRING IT ON!

Or hell I might start my top 20 list of guitar players who are NOT better than Alex and Eddie!

it's all good. it's just that I agree with most of the comments from those that are discussing who is more interesting or better all round and prefer Alex. I agree. A think the question you ask is more compelling since it illustrates the difference between technical skills/virtuosity and music that is interesting or entertaining. You could have easily asked if Yngwie or Satch are more skilled than Alex and I would have voted for either of them but I still prefer Alex and believe he has the other intangible gifts that are more difficult to measure such as talent and songwriting skill over the other three put together.

Voted Alex for obvious reasons. He's a better guitarist and musician in general, in my opinion.

On a related note, someone once tried to convince me that EVH was a better guitarist than Steve Hackett. I WTF'd.

Well said! I love Eddie but I had to give my vote to Alex.

Apples to oranges is fun to compare on here.

Comparing apples to apples is boring.

Would that be like comparing Joe Satriani to Steve Vai?

Teacher V. Student?

Both are great too and in my opinion, both blow John Petrucci away.

I really don't understand all the hype about John.

Sure he is an exceptional guitarist, but he is too text book smart for me.

Give me Steve Hackett, Steve Rothery or even Steve Morse over John.

After all John is in a high end progressive rock band that is addicted to cover songs.

Now that Mike is out of the band, I can only hope that Wet Dream Theater plays their own music going forward.

I prefer the "High 'N Dry" Dream Theater.

Maybe DT can cover the that album by Def Leppard.

That was an enjoyable read, haha. And really, he is an insanely technically gifted guitarist. But watching him play, most of the time, it's like watching a machine play. (I often imagine a MIDI sequencer in his place. laugh.gif ) Sure he can write more emotional stuff like the solo in "The Spirit Carries On", hell even "Another Day", but it's just in his execution mostly that turns me off. And he needs to chill out sometimes (e.g. refraining from going into "killzone mode" randomly). Then again, he is a metal guitarist.

LIFESON gets the vote.

They're both extremely gifted/musically imaginative,

with TONS of creative talent, on guitar.

More people have prob heard of EVH then Alex,

but I think overall, they're so close to being equal,

it's not even funny...It's a tough call, but Alex

gets the nod. yes.gif 2.gif
