It is literally an internet fad. All those stupid videos and pictures and phrases that go around Facebook and all that are generally just called "memes". More often than not, people don't even know where the meme came from (unless they were around at the time of its origin, around the site 4chan or something). Occasionally they will slip into national media, usually by way of spam or just the right person in the right place at the right time, but generally they stay on popular sites like 4chan, Youtube, DeviantART, and those sort of sites. For more, just go to knowyourmeme.com, which I mentioned in an earlier post. ^^
