Plus (no pun intended), when you get down to multiplication/division (or addition/subtraction, as well) in the order of operations, you are supposed to go from left to right. 288. Tarkus406
The multiplication is being applied to the 2 in this equation, though. If it were (48/2)(9+3) it would be 288. But since the 48 is in the numerator by itself the denominator is 2(9+3) which is 24. 48 divided by 24 is 2. That's just my 48/2(9+3) cents. Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction BOO YA! But this isn't really about the order of operations. It's about which terms are on what side of the fraction, and which term is getting multiplied by (9+3)! If done exactly the way the equation is written, the answer is two. Because the 48 does not get multiplied at all. The reason there is confusion is because some people are seeing it like (48/2)(9+3), which in that case, it would have had to have been written that way in order to equal 288. If the answer is meant to be 288, the OP left out vital brackets.
USB Connector
My calculator says 288 when I punch it in as is, but to me it's 2 because the multiplication of 2 and 9+3 is not separated my a multiplication sign and therefore meaning the two is simply factored out. The equation is poorly written to say the least. I always write divisions using two lines so people can clearly identify the numerator and denominator. The answer is 2 because there are no brackets... sure you could add them but maybe that wasn't the intent of the person who wrote the equation. Rolinda Bonz
i get 288. yes, we do the stuff inside the parentheses first, but then after that its left to right. 48/2(9+3) = 48/2(12) = 24(12) = 288 the folks that are getting 2 as an answer are multiplying the 2 times the twelve before they divided. but that's going right to left, which is right out. Now find my missing dollar 3 traveling salesmen arrive late and bleary eyed to their hotel. their reservation got screwed up and only 1 room is available. they agree to share the room, each pitching in $10. after they've headed upstairs to the room, the manager of the hotel feels bad about the mix up. so he gives 5 $1 bills to the bellhop to take up to the 3 salesmen as a recompensory discount. on the way upstairs, the bellhop can't decide how to split the 5 ones amongst the 3 men. so he pockets $2 and refunds each of the 3 salesman $1 each. but on the way back down stairs, he is perplexed to account for the original $30. Each salemen in effect paid $9 for his share of the room, $10 - $1 = $9 and there are 3 salesmen $9 * 3 = $27 and the bellhop gave himself a $2 "tip" $27 + $2 = $29 what happened to the last dollar? Addition and subtraction are done at the wrong times, producing inadequate results. The boys paid 25$ total, 2$ is in the BB's pocket and 3$ are with the salesman. How many people did you think you could fool with this?
Tarkus406
There's really no reason for this equation to be "stirrin up shit". It's simple as f**k and the way it is written...it's 2. But some guy who wasn't sure of his math had to say "but what about the division, dont you do that first?", without realizing the division is in between two totally separated terms until the very end. My old college math prof. would have laughed at this
