barney_rebel
QUOTE (Good, bad, andrush @ Apr 8 2011, 01:19 PM) if it read like this: 48/(2(9+3)) then the answer would be 2. You'd distribute the 2 to 9 and 3 and get 18+6 or you could just multiply two by 12. Either way, what's in the parenthesis becomes 24, and 48/24 is 2. But it reads like this: 48/2(9+3) So does the "slash" make a difference rather than a divide sign? I thought with a divide sign, everything precedes it goes on the numerator, while everything after it goes on the denominator. That would give you a 2. Good, bad, andrush
to end this, once and for all. If it is written as 48 over (2x(9+3)) then the answer is 2. If not, it can be implied that (9+3) is on top, and therefore 48/2 equals 24. 24x12 would be 288. So it really depends on how it is written. This is just vague really, but it should be 288 if the 48 is only on top of the 2.

Lost In Xanadu
QUOTE (snowdogged @ Apr 8 2011, 12:33 PM) I asked the last math teacher that I had when I was in high school and she could not come up with an answer for it. However, I think the fact that she died six years ago had more to do with it.
Raider917
when you see an equation like this: 48 24(2) you have to go 48 24(2) = 2 then multiply the 2 in brackets? you dont divide 48 by 48 in one step?
