I LOVE black metal! A lot of these bands seem to consider the atmosphere of the music more important than the music, so that's why the recordings always sound hideous. I guess it amplifies the dark, depressed, icy mood they're trying to capture.

Not a big fan of the BM genre but there are a few gems I like:

Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain + The Mantle

Enslaved - Vertebrae

Alcest - Souvernirs d'un Autre Monde

Immortal - Sons of Northern Darkness

Wolves in the Throne Room - Diadem of 12 Stars

and also venom created the black metal look and the black metal production but you listen to something like burzum or even mayhem beyond their first demos and no black metal sounds like venom

venom was hugely influential but you can hear more influence by bands like hellhammer, celtic frost, and even thrash groups like sodom, destruction, kreator, sarcofago, early early sepultura in the black metal bands of the 90s and the black metal bands of today.

i will say to anyone into metal who cant get into bm, keep trying. first time i heard black metal i was 12 or 13 and i thought it sucked cause it wasnt anything like metallica/iron maiden/stuff i was used to. but once i started listening to bathory i realized that this genre is great

Wow, this is the first time I saw this thread! Props to Steevo for the bump!!

I´m not really into Black Metal, but I travel to Norway a lot for work, and was lucky to catch Enslaved live once, it was awesome! The next time I´m there I´ll see if I manage to go see one of those true corpse-painted black metal bands like Emperor, Immortal etc. They used to have a Black Metal festival in Bergen every year, but they stopped doing that because it was always the exact same bands. either way, Norwegians are proud of having so many bands of this style.

By the way, I suggest you check out this awesome website called the "Vegan Black Metal Chef" - hilarious stuff!!1

My opinion has changed a lot since I posted this. Now I'm a huge black metal fan! Here are some excellent albums I have to add to my list: (I'd appreciate some recs from you guys as well.)

Enslaved - Riitiir + Ruun + Isa

Alcest - Les Voyages de L'Ame + Ecailles de Lune

Wolves in the Throne Room - Celestial Lineage

Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse

Ihsahn - Eremita

Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger + Panzerfaust

Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times

Fen - Dustwalker

Primordial - To the Nameless Dead

Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark

Dimmu Borgir - Death Cult Armageddon

Ulver - Nattens Madrigal

Deathspell Omega - Paracletus

1349 - Demonoir

Krallice - Years Past Matter

Sacramentum - Far Away From the Sun

Darkspace - I

Negura Bunget - Om

Dordeduh - Dar De Duh

Drudkh - Autumn Aurora

Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta II

Coldworld - Melancholie

Midnight Odyssey - Funerals From the Astral Sphere (some of the most beautiful BM I've ever heard)

Altar of Plagues - Mammal

And last but not least, one of my favorite black metal finds: Paysage d'Hiver - Das Tor. This is a strong contender for black metal AOTY. Think of it as Agalloch on steroids.

I actually just finished listening to Das Tor! Paysage D'hiver and Coldworld are indeed the greats of Ambient Black Metal!

Just listened to Blut Aus Nord's debut album "Ultima Thulee." Absolutely superb ambient/atmospheric BM. Nate, check this one out.

Went to Newbury Comics and bought a Blut Aus Nord disc...fantastic stuff!
