When geddylee.net closed I started rushforum.net (no "the" and of no relation to this forum). I have backups going back to late 2000. A few years later I decided to make it not just Rush related, opening it up for other topics and changing the name and domain to randominteraction.net. I decided to give up hosting a forum and dealing with trolls in 2008 and closed up shop.

The early days were great. I met my wife in 2002 on my forum and many other wonderful people, the Queen included.

I presume you mean the "professional" trolls not the annoying opinionated people that every forum has as regular members.

At Progarchives we are plagued by people who join up just to cause chaos and real offence. I am not talking about "regular" people like Nikkslikk for example, but people who for some reason travel from forum to forum or a few pet forums just to cause chaos - posting of porn, death threats, craziness beyond high jinx. When you email some of their names or email addresses you find them referenced on forum after forum as banned or suspended. IP blocking doesn't seem to work. I had one particular one on Progarchives who infiltrated our front page review section and threatened to murder me, my family and anyone who knew me. All totally unlikely but unsettling nonetheless. That is why I don't like the word "troll" being used for someone just trying to get a rise out of another member, real internet trolls are far more sinister than that.

Know what would be cool? A little timeline for when these boards started, and if and when they shut down. Just for a little historical perspective.

????-???? - Rush.net
????-???? - GeddyLee.net
????-???? - TRInet
????-present - Counterparts
????-present - RushTour
????-present - By-Tor
????-present - RIAB
????-present - The National Midnight Sun
2004-present - The Rush Forum

If anyone knows the ACCURATE dates, add to this...

have you tried archive.org?

I have not! But I will inquire. wink.gif

What about Rush.com? Didn't Geddy Lee have his own website called My Favorite Headache, around 2003? Last year, I found it was a part of Rush.com, via Rush.net. Or have I got it wrong?

geddylee.net was MFH website if memory serves.

Thinking about it, MFH must've been about 2000 - has it gone?

yep...long gone.

Oh, no... sad.gif sad.gif What happened? I remember wanting to join it then but didn't have the internet, let alone know how to register for it (unlike now). I also remember two other things about: like when it opened up there were lots of spirals (Gordian knot?) etc with "I Need This Like I Need A Hole In The Head!" flashing on & off, & that you could get the lyrics to his songs just by clicking on the screen.

Add me to the list (I see I'm not alone) of those who verify email and never get approved over there. I can't believe I've been a Rush fan for less than six months and already have that much of a reputation, but I guess so!

I'm happy and busy enough here and in a Rush group on Facebook, and read RIAB and post very occasionally...I may check out Rush Tour Forum one of these days, we'll see.

I always catch up Counterparts members when I visit RushCon. A good portion of the membership there attends.

The first couple of RushCons there was a dividing line between TriNet posters and Counterparts posters. It was ridiculous.

We did have quite a good time didnt we James?

It was rushforum.net incidentally, that bestowed the title of Queen upon me! And then I just went to hell with myself and bestowed medieval titles on everyone! LOL

trink39.gif thanks James for all the hard work you put into those early incarnations! Dont know where...or who!...I'd be without you. (and your lovely Lady G)

I doubt it could be a reputation thing. I never got approved either, but it's possible it got lost in the maze of the interwebs, ignored, misplaced, forgotten about..?

I really have no idea. I just thought it was strange. Does anyone actually know why some get approved and some (apparently) don't?

Yes, MFH and geddylee.net were the same. I'm almost positive it shut down in late 2001 or sometime in 2002. Some of us members here at TRF were a part of that board too.

I was a member of Counterparts at the same time I was a member of geddylee.net so that site is at least 9 years old.

Their server is somewhat unreliable, though I think they've had fewer problems of late. That might explain some of the registration problems.

I think it actually went down in 2000.."the board wars" started to affect it and I know for certain I was safely ensconced in rushforum.net by 2001.

I don't think it's been the same since the old AOL forums WAAAAAAY back! We had a pretty good crew over there, lots of trading! Lot's of fun! It was a really good community. That's where a good bunch of us initially found Dan (The Digital Dan) and did a lot of trading/seeding with him. Someone would get a good source, send it to him, he'd master it on CD-r and we'd seed it like CRAZY!

Some of that crew morphed into the Digital Rush Experience forums..then things went separate ways because of a couple people that were really hard to deal with from a trading perspective. One guy in particular really got into my craw! I got out of the "forum thing" for a while (since hard core trading went to the wayside, and the whole Bit-Torrent thing took over) then found this one, and pop in occasionally for my Rush fix!

I've PMd FJ from the Admin Team about the registration problems. It certainly has nothing to do with reputation or behaviour on this board!!

CP, I am told, gets an average of 80 spam registrations daily. When you register there is a filter question where you are asked to name your favorite Rush album. They look for that as an indicator that you are not a bot. If you registered and didn't plug that in, you might be blasted away with the bots, so be sure to check for it.

CP is a great place to go if you're looking for book recommendations, like this one

It's an angrier, more obscene, and clique-ish rush board.

Agree with this. Left that board after that crash. This place gets cliquish at times but nowhere close to CP, and folks seem to be much friendlier here.

Ah, Infospam.

You're not Nigerian are you?

To repeat what Soddy is saying here, please try to re-register at CP if you can.

Hey, did you guys ever get the Chat function on a separate server over there?

Somewhere on CP there is a "TRF refugee" thread that got opened when our server had a 3-day outage. There's a similar thread on Reverse Polarity here for C-Peeps. It's worked quite well most of the time, with only a little rancor here and there. (Such as when some of our members behaved poorly and ignored the requests of the Counterparts members to stop using Chat during peak board hours, as it slowed the whole board down. Sorry about that).

mofo

None of these are what I typed...edited for my convenience.

I remember you from the old AOL Rush forums, Ben! I was CybrKhatru over there... actually found a wonderful bass player for one of my bands thanks to that community.

Yeah, I remember that nic! I just thought that back then (in any of the forums) there was a better sense of community, and information being passed...not only that (not Rush, mind you) some forums had actual band members stopping in from time to time!

Zappa had Don Preston, and Mike Keneally, Dream Theater had Charlie Dominici and Derek Sherinian, not to mention Portnoy occasionally posting some tidbit of info. Yes had Billy Sherwood.

I think a lot of it was the trading community was a lot broader because there weren't many file sharing sites up...bit torrent was in it's infancy for sure!

Good to hear from ya!
