I see the hat as a pragmatic instrument to keep the sweat out of his eyes. It may be his trademark by now, but otherwise it means nothing other than just a pragmatic accessory.

 

So I voted for the "I am Neil Peart. You are being ridiculous" answer. For real, if Neil were to stumble upon this forum, I can imagine him shaking his head and saying "Idiot!" often a la Ruri Hoshino from Nadesico.

I vote lose the hat! I honest-to-God think he looks better without it.
