One of my favourites bands is The Decemberists but they don't half excel in doing some very depressing songs like The Hazards of Love and Eli the barrow boy. Possibly one of the most saddest is off their very first album.

Song is called "Leslie Anne Levine"

My name is Leslie Anne Levine

My mother birthed me down a dry ravine

My mother birthed me far too soon

Born at nine and dead at noon

Fifteen years gone now

I still wander this parapet

And shake my rattle bone

Fifteen years gone now

I still cling to the petticoats

Of the girl who died with me

On the roofs above the streets

The only love I've known's a chimney sweep

Lost and lodged inside a flue

Back in 1842

Fifteen years gone now

I still wail from these catacombs

And curse my mother's name

Fifteen years gone now

Still a wastrel mesallied

Has brought this fate on me

My name is Leslie Anne Levine

I've got no one left to mourn for me

My body lies inside its grave

In a ditch not far away

Fifteen years gone now

I still wander this parapet

And shake my rattle bone

Fifteen years gone now

I still cling to the petticoats

Of the girl who died with me

I love Slowdive. One of their more depressing songs is "Erik's Song" from their "Just for a Day" CD.

I bought that album back in 2003 just before the tragic fire at the Station Nightclub fire in Warwick, Rhode Island.

Every time I hear that particular song, I think of that tragedy.

Erik's Song

Yeah I love "Erik's Song" as well. For me, it really depends on the mood I am in! I mean one day it may make me feel sad, the next, it may make me very happy. Overall, it's one of those bittersweet songs for me. Great atmospheres.

Slowdive - "Morningrise"

I have been listening to this one a lot recently. Talk about a wall of sound! It's an awesome experience listening to it on a good pair of headphones cranked (to a safe volume wink.gif ). But yes, musically and lyrically depressing, this one is.

Awesome!  I'm d/ling now.

I've been listening to Just For A Day for a week or so now and have been letting it sink in slowly.  Such dreary, emotional music.  I prefer stuff like this to upbeat music anyday

No problem, dude! trink39.gif

Just For A Day will always be my favourite Slowdive album for personal / experiential reasons. It makes me feel like none other. In fact, it was the first album to really induce strong emotion in me through music. music.gif

Oh, that post about The Decemberists reminded me of the closer from The Hazards of Love, "The Hazards of Love 4 (The Drowned)". Depending on my mood, I'll shed a few tears, especially when the music stops and the slide guitar comes in. It's a beautiful kind of sad, though.
