What was the last truly great album?

Moving Pictures was the last truly great Rush album, I think. There's a great mix of the band's Prog sensibilities and ability to be creative within the shorter song framework. The production is great too, something that is sadly lacking on the next two studio albums.

I think we under-estimate the likes of Tom Sawyer, YYZ, Red Barchetta and Limelight because we are so familiar with them. These are truly stunning achievements and probably constitute the finest first side of an LP ever laid down on vinyl.

great is saying something so I have to say Grace Under Pressure.
Roll The Bones was close.
Vapor Trails would be it if it were more listenable and had 2-3 less songs.

roll the bones? huh.gif

Yep

Glad to know alot like counterparts. That would be my choice too. Surprised most didn't say signals. Counterparts production is great. Test for echo was my first time seeing rush. I will always hold a special place in my heart for that one. Its got flaws looking back, but CP was a great album..

Half of Snakes and Arrows is crap and you all know it so please stop. It was a decent album, but certainly not great. Fact. atickhum.gif

Fact? Where can I read of this fact? On Wikipedia?

Snakes and Arrows. i actually enjoy every song on that album.

most of the ones being said have songs on them i don't care for. like VT, i don't care for OOTC. Counterparts, Everyday Glory. Presto, Superconductor and HoF.

The last "great" album, like a noble title, that I could readily compare to Moving Pictures and other albums old fogies get on about, would be Power Windows. But the last very very very very "good" album was definitely Counterparts.

Old Fogies?

Something that gets lost in all this is that in the age of vinyl albums were a lot shorter.

All of the truly great albums from 2112 through Signals were between 35 minutes and 40 minutes long.

With the invention of the CD they gradually got longer into over 50 minutes for the 90's and in the over 60 minute range for VT and Snakes.

I would argue you actually have more great music (minute wise) than on Snakes than on any other album.

Hemispheres is probably the most complete album with no real weak tracks but only 36 minutes.

MP - trash Vital Signs leaves you less than 36 minutes of quality (I would trash Limelight as well - IMO Ialways thought that track sucks)

Perm Waves is only 35 in total (and many would trash Diff Strings or JL)

etc.,etc., etc.,

Snakes and Arrows has way more than 35 minutes worth of great music.
