My current finances didn't allow for an amp at the same time, so for now, I practice unplugged and use my guitar amp at lower volume to record.

Ugh, that's rough man. I hate having to play bass without an amp. It just sounds like crap.

I feel your pain!

Well, I'm happy to say I resolved this issue recently. Invested in a small but serviceable practice amp for now. I'll look at something bigger when I can.

My Soundgear SR800 that I've had for over twenty years, bought new. This is a web pic but the same one.

Just acquired this as my first real 'normal' bass - I also have what I later learned is a 3/4 scale Jay Turser, a hollow-bodied semi-acoustic Ibanez Artcore, and a Waterstone TP-34 12-string.

Here is my shiny new (and soon-to-be-delivered) Fender Jazz American Special:

http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/g454/GoddessMika/shinynewredbass_zpsdde39638.jpg

Oh, I can't stop drooling over it! I can't wait to get it into my hands!

And quick question: does anyone have recommendations on a bass amp? Embarrassingly, I've so far just been using my guitar amp, and think it's time to invest in something a little more... bassy. Any ideas? That aren't too expensive? :P

Filled in the slots on my Mike Dirnt Squier P-Bass nearly completing my mod...Quarter pound Seymour with orange cap and cloth wiring. My tech is the best. Pics to follow.

Apple is a million times better-looking than cherry. Good choice!

For amps, I'm no professional but I bought a 75 watt Fender rumble that suits my needs just fine now. If you play out you can also use it for a monitor (just tip it back, it's built so it can rest that way aimed at you- pretty cool). No wheels or anything though if you're a weakling like me! It retails for about $250 however if you get it at Guitar Center like I did just wait for one of their 50 holiday special weekends and you'll get it for cheaper.

I use an Ibanez Soundgear SR300X with it and love the sound. For an inexpensive bass ( < $300) it gives a good growl, not the "Geddy AFTK-Signals bass growl" I was hoping to try and get, but close enough.

Here's a picture of it from Guitar Center. The lighting when they took this makes the amp look shittier than it actually is. :dweez:

My warwick 5 string is one ugly bass, but i like it. :)

Jesus, that thing must weigh a ton! Everytime I try a Warwick out for shits & giggles they just never "click" with me I don't know why.

Here is my 1995 Fender Jazz. Upgraded to Hipshot Ultralite tuners and an A style bridge. It's a bit dirty...

Here is another shot of my MIA Jazz. I can't believe I have had this for over 15 years.

Here are a couple of shots of my Mike Dirnt fretless conversion. It is the Squier version.

In the second shot you can see how well the markers came out. My tech is quite talented. The bass has a SD Quarter Pounder with cloth wiring and an orange drop cap. This bass is amazing...
