GeddyRulz
QUOTE (ReRushed @ Oct 29 2010, 08:47 PM) Rob Reiner is partly responsible for one of the funniest movies of all-time and a few memorably entertaining films. But he's really dropped the ball the past decade or so. So many bad movies. He hasn't directed much in the past decade, but his track record is pretty darned good: This is Spinal Tap, The Sure Thing, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, A Few Good Men, The American President, and Ghosts of Mississippi are all excellent movies. QUOTE I know it's subjective to pick one's favorite director, but why do some people think Kevin Smith is a good filmmaker? I just don't see it. His "Jersey" series did something that hadn't been done before: tell the unabashed story of young people from my generation who work dead-end retail jobs... and partly romanticize that life. QUOTE Ron Howard is a very good technical filmmaker, but he's horribly unoriginal. I think of him not as an artist but as an artisan. I do love a few of his films, particularly Apollo 13. I think its, by far, his best film. I don't know what you mean exactly by "unoriginal." He's mainstream Hollywood now, sure, and he's not making artsy-fartsy stuff, but it's good. Howard films that I liked include Night Shift, Cocoon, Parenthood, Apollo 13, Ransom, A Beautiful Mind, and Da Vinci Code.

tontonfranck
QUOTE (rushgoober @ Oct 29 2010, 09:40 PM) I don't know if I have one favorite, but certainly way up there also is David Cronenberg. I haven't loved every movie of his I've seen, but I've never been bored by one! Some of my faves by him: Cronenberg is the first name to come to my mind. I woul add Scorcese, Coppola Jarmush R Altman W Allen Takeshi Kitano Terrence Mallick A Ferrara (not everything) Jacques Audiard (a french genius) Tarantino P Jackson Kubrick (B LYndon is maybe THE movie) etc... Slaine mac Roth
I suppose for me, I would have to go for: Robert Wise Ridley Scott Alfred Hitchcock Akira Kurosawa Tim Burton Stanley Kubrick and a special mention has to go to Joss Whedon - he may have only have directed one film as of yet (Serenity) but what a film! Cowtothesky
All the directors who have hired me. I guess my favorite is Steven Spielberg. I love how he tells the story through imagery and his use of music in his films. Edited November 2, 2010 by Cowtothesky

Presto-digitation
Probably Scorsese or Tarantino (his own films...not collaborations, screenwrites only, etc). I've also become a big Fincher and Cohen Bros. nut as well. Peter Jackson also rarely disappoints me.
JohnnyBlaze
3 directors that have consistently satisfied me are Stanley Kubrick, the Coen brothers, and the NEVER mentioned Brad Bird.
rushgoober
QUOTE (ReRushed @ Oct 29 2010, 06:47 PM) The following directors frustrate me: I know it's subjective to pick one's favorite director, but why do some people think Kevin Smith is a good filmmaker? I just don't see it. Kevin Smith is growing on me. Earlier movies like Chasing Amy I thought was overrated and Dogma I thought was terrible. I thought Jersey Girl, however, was very good, and Zack and Miri Make a Porno especially was excellent. In terms of overrated, I think Quentin Tarantino is the king of overrated. First off, I can't even watch him anymore because of the absolutely unnecessary over the top excessive gratuitous violence, but beyond that I think he's just incredibly self-indulgent and a lot more in love with his work than I am. Way too much style without substance. My absolute least favorite director is Tim Burton. Even he's made some good movies like Big Fish and Ed Wood, but everything else I've seen by him has been annoying and painful to sit through. I really can't understand his enduring appeal. You've picked two of his worst as his 'best,' IMO. QUOTE In terms of overrated, I think Quentin Tarantino is the king of overrated. Way too much style without substance. Agreed! Tarantino is a guy who made two great movies - "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction" - and then took a long ride on his reputation. QUOTE My absolute least favorite director is Tim Burton. Even he's made some good movies like Big Fish and Ed Wood, but everything else I've seen by him has been annoying and painful to sit through. I really can't understand his enduring appeal. Agreed! Burton is a one-note director. We get it. We got it a long time ago, his macabre comedies starring Depp and Bonham-Carter. They're all the same, and I'm not interested in any of them.

I thought Zack and Miri was HILARIOUS. The ten minutes or so when they were at the high school reunion near the beginning is comedic perfection. GeddyRulz
I haven't said this yet, because I know everyone will disagree with me, but.... I think Kubrick is over-rated.
