How do you introduce someone to RUSH?

Presto-a RUSH fan!

Recommended Posts

If you are going to introduce RUSH to a person that has never heard them, (or they have heard Tom Saywer and Limelight only) what songs do you put on a cd for them?

First, what complete album would you give them?

Second, what 5 songs would you give them on a cd (in what order)?

My answers are:

Album: 2112

Five Songs:

1. YYZ

2. Xanadu

3. Red Barchetta (I'm assuming they haven't heard this)

4. Presto

5. Far Cry

Damn that was hard...I think if I waited 5 mins I'd change my mind on the 5 songs.

Why only 5 songs? You can stick 80 minutes on a cd. Anyway.

Album:

Chronicles (if compilations are permitted - Chronicles set me off on my Rush journey)

Permanent Waves or Moving Pictures are the safe choices as far as albums.

Five Songs:

The Spirit of Radio

Subdivisions

Far Cry

La Villa Strangiato

Natural Science

The reason I just went with the 5 songs was to make it hard. Just wanted to see what fans would pick.

On the album I was thinking studio albums not greatest hits. But it doesn't matter.

Chronicles for sure would be an excellent way to start a new fan on.

It depends on the tastes of the potential fan in question.

A general 5 songs?

1) Anthem

This might appeal to someone into 70's hard rock.

2) Spirit of Radio

New wave-ish 80's sound with classic lyrics

3) Time Stand Still

Good representative of what the band was about in the late 1980's

4) Stick it Out

Show's the bands range and ability to adapt by exhibiting grunge-like aspects.

5) Peaceable Kingdom

Sounds a lot like it was mixed and produced by the same people responsible for a lot of acts in the early 2000's

Album: A Farewell to Kings

Album exhibits the height of the band's most popular progressive era, with the hit song Closer to the Heart.

Nice explanations! I can't believe I didn't include Peaceable Kingdom in my list. It's one of my favorites.

I suppose it really depends on what kind of music they listen to  confused13.gif

yes.gif

For example, I have an acquaintance who has heard The Trees and is interested in hearing more. So a list for him would be different than one for, say, my Aunt. laugh.gif

I am thinking about a nice mix CD for this acquaintance right now so this thread will be very helpful.

Album: Permanent Waves (since he has a Prog bent in he first place)

Songs:

Natural Science

Xanadu

La Villa Strangiato

Roll The Bones

Peaceable Kingdom

That's a good start. Thanks for the ideas.

It really depends on their music tastes. For somebody who likes "normal" music I would give them Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures. Otherwise I would recommend Hemispheres (my favorite!).

The top 5 songs would probably be:

1) Hemispheres

2) Natural Science

3) Subdivisions

4) 2112

5) YYZ

You just play the popular stuff, then the rocking but not so popular stuff, then the gems.

Everyone's heard Tom Sawyer and Limelight.

Here in SLC, radio stations frequently play Freewill, Spirit of Radio, Closer To The Heart, and even Working Man and Fly By Night. They must be big down here.

I play people those. Then awesome material. I like the R30 version of Red Barchetta (amazing IMO) , everyone seems to like Territories, Virtuality (even with the lyrics), and stuff like Counterparts. After all that everyone seems to dig La Villa Strangiato, The Trees, and less popular stuff like that.

After the new guitar hero, a couple friends recently asked if they could borrow 2112.

But for more simple minds some of their mid 70's stuff rocks enough for AC/DC or Led Zep-type fans.

Um... okay. What the hell is that supposed to mean? AC/DC and Zeppelin fans are simple-minded? Or were the bands themselves simple-minded? Which insult are you going to go with?

For album, I'd say Permanent Waves. There's The Spirit of Radio and Freewill to keep with the more well known stuff, then the gems that don't get much mention outside of fan circles. As well as showing where they were with the more progressive stuff (Jacobs Ladder, Natural Science) and where they were headed.

Plus it's their best (IMO of course)

Or if they're like me, Grace Under Pressure (that's what did me in)

Songs...I think chronological makes sense for Rush

1. Working Man

2. Xanadu

3. The Spirit of Radio

4. Subdivisions

5. Caravan

even though I skipped Moving Pictures and the whole of the 90's I don't see it as much of a problem. The person is probably familiar with a bit of Moving Pictures (Tom Sawyer and Limelight definitely, the other tracks depend on musical background), and the 90's is mostly lost gems that kind of take getting through everything else to really appreciate. (how many people became Rush fans based on Roll the Bones? anyone?)

i put Caravan on there because it's probably the most representative of the best Rush has had to offer since Vapor Trails.

Far cry

Second nature

Manhattan project

YYZ

The trees

No need for further explanation

Just a cut through I thought of in 0.3 seconds laugh.gif

btw, I never put energy in people who are not sincere about Rush, actually are not interested, or just wanna make fun of Geddy's voice.

If you don't wanna know, the happier I am.

I would introduce A Farewell to Kings

1) Xanadu

2) La Villa Strangiato

3) YYZ

4) The Pass

5) Available Light

I got some people into Rush by using The Pass and Available light

and i used La Villa & YYZ to some others and they seemed to have worked
