HBO Series Thread

This thread could serve as an overall meeting place for any and all peoples with questions and/or comments concerning the multitudinous array of programming on the various Home Box Office channels.

Right now I'm watching what I believe to be the debut episode of a new HBO series called, 'Boardwalk Empie'...a docu-drama based around the dark convergence point between crime and politics in 1920's Atlantic City, NJ. It's on again later...as it probably will be weeks on end.

Looks pretty darn interestng right from the get go, and was wondering if any of ya'll were watching along and had any opinions on the cast, settings, directing and all other relevant whatnot. Several stars here, but it looks like the main lead goes to Steve Buscemi. I guess that he portrays the role of Nucky Thompson, the undisputed ruler of Atlantic City, who was equal parts politician and gangster during this pivotal era....like an East Coast Capone meets Boss Tweed.

It might be tough to talk about Bill Mahar's show in here for two reasons. One is that he's a total helmet who's not half as funny as he thinks he is (tongue.gif). And more importantly, it's hard to talk about his show without getting political, and political talk belongs in SOCN.

Also, I imagine there are already existing threads for many of the existing HBO series. I know there are big threads for "The Wire" and "The Sopranos," for instance.

And locator, as for your use of the word "multitudinous" in your first paragraph, allow me to say on behalf of the entire board: CLICK HERE

I am eagerly awaiting Game Of Thrones. 1287.gif

That looks cool as all get-out! Thanks for the heads-up, I had no idea they were doing this show. Unfortunately, when I clicked on the vids they didn't work so I read the "about the show" and it does sound intriguing.

The few videos that are up are very short and don't really give a peek at anything.

The book series is ridiculously nut-kicking good. No other novels have literally dropped my jaw while reading. Numerous occasions I've had to set the book down for a moment, just to recover from a certain twist or something that happened to a character. I've never read anything that rattles me the way this story does. These books are so damn good, HBO has plenty ways to fail or disappoint somewhere. Still... I'm sure the show will be amazing.

The wife and I have been thoroughly enjoying Boardwalk Empire, which is great, as I was afraid she would think it was too gangster. I mean the first episode was directed by Martin Scorsese, not exactly her favorite director (many groans of "AGAIN???" have been heard in the Goober house as she finds me watching Goodfellas, and Raging Bull and Casino hardly get better reactions).

Anyway, this is a great show. Does anyone know how loosely or closely this is based on real events? Obviously many of the characters were real people.

Glad to have an HBO show to occupy our time while True Blood is on hiatus till next season...

New episode new episode! Can't wait.

Last night's ep was fantastic! Highlights for me were the look on Margaret Schroeder's face when she found out she was basically a concubine (Kelly Macdonald is one terrific actress) and the end scene with Agent Van Alden! I knew he was messed up ever since the ep where he stole Margaret's hair ribbon and was sniffing it in his room later, but I didn't know he was that messed up!

Great freakin' show!

Awesome. I'm going to have to see this on DVD, not having the premium channels, but it sure looks good. Love reading that that's not an empty assumption. trink39.gif
