The Green Bay Packers have reached a deal with their top free agent, wide receiver Randall Cobb, agreeing to a four-year, $40 million contract.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the deal Saturday evening.

 

Cobb's agent, Jimmy Sexton, was able to speak financial terms with other teams around the NFL during a three-day window, but the only team that could sign the receiver was the Packers until the start of free agency Tuesday.

 

Sexton shopped Cobb around the NFL before agreeing on a deal that came in closer to what the Packers wanted than what Cobb originally was seeking.

 

Cobb, according to a league source, told the Packers he would accept less to return to Green Bay. Originally, sources had indicated, he was seeking $12 million per year.

 

It's possible that Cobb couldn't get that from another team. NFL Network said he had interest from six or seven teams, but spreading the word that he would give the Packers a discount could have been a face-saving measure.

 

The Packers were not going to break the $10 million mark with Cobb because it would have created a fracture in their salary structure given Jordy Nelson is averaging $9.75 million per year and is considered their No. 1 wide receiver. Cobb is mostly a slot receiver who functions better in the Packers offense than he probably would in more traditional offenses.

 

The Packers were facing a challenge in that the salary cap has gone up $20 million in two years and salaries are expected to skyrocket when free agency begins. However, they also knew Cobb's talents were best used playing with quarterback Aaron Rodgers and that leaving might mean he'd wind up in a rebuilding situation.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees and others may be reeling in the wake of the decision to trade tight end Jimmy Graham to Seattle, but the team isn’t letting that get in the way of their pursuit of new additions to the roster.

 

They are starting with players who could help a defense that was too leaky last season. The team is reportedly interested in cornerback Brandon Browner and Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that they are receiving a visit from cornerback Tramon Williams on Tuesday night.

 

Williams has missed just one game for the Packers over the last eight seasons and had 70 tackles and three interceptions in 16 starts last season. Reports last week had the Seahawks making a run at signing Williams, but they’ve since signed Cary Williams and Will Blackmon at the position.

 

If he signs elsewhere, the Packers will need to replace him and Davon House in the secondary next season.

It's official! Bryan Bulaga signs a 5-year contract, and he is VERY happy to remain a Packer. He and his wife love the Green Bay area, and he really loves playing with his band of brothers on the O-Line. The Packers' entire offensive line is now signed thru 2016. Bakhtiari, Sitton, Linsley, Lang and Bulaga have high expectations for this year and beyond.

OK, Packer fans, the Green & Gold are very busy preparing for the NFL Draft, but in the meantime, they've re-signed defensive linemen Letroy Guion and B.J. Raji.

 

Guion may be facing some time off due to his brush with the Florida authorities. The Packers apparently believe that he is not going to be a problem. Raji is chomping at the bit to get back on the field after missing all last year to a torn biceps. Even with these important signings, the Packers could very well draft some more stud defensive linemen. You can never have enough linemen..... :D

The Green Bay Packers have lost a treasured member of their family.

 

Former public relations director Lee Remmel, who grew up in Green Bay and witnessed the rise of the historic franchise, later covered Curly Lambeau and Vince Lombardi squads for the Green Bay Press-Gazette and then served as one of the club's great ambassadors, died Thursday at age 90.

 

"The Packers lost a cherished family member today," said Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy. "Lee was a key member of the organization for many years and his knowledge of Packers history was unparalleled. He was a great ambassador and through his public relations work, he helped multiple generations of Packers fans learn more about the team. We extend our sincerest condolences to his family."

 

Remmel became the Packers' public relations director in 1974 and served until 2004, when he became the Packers' team historian. As PR director, Remmel forged many friendships with coaches, players and reporters, and his loyalty to the organization was second to none.

 

Remmel, who worked for the Press-Gazette for nearly 30 years, either covered or worked for every Packers coach and was on hand for the Packers' first four Super Bowl appearances. He was a fixture at the Super Bowls, and at Super Bowl XL Remmel was recognized as one of 12 media contributors who had worked the first 40 Super Bowls; he was the lone representative in the public relations category.

 

Remmel was always good for a story. It was usually in the media auditorium, waiting for a news conference to start, when he'd bring up the exploits of Max McGee, or in the locker room, waiting for a player to come out of the showers, when he would recapture the tension between Lombardi, the devout Catholic, and Lambeau, the ladies man.

 

Remmel's green eyes often twinkled with stories of presidents, commissioners and starlets who graced Lambeau Field — he was there for the opening in 1957. There isn't a reporter on the Packers beat from the last 25 years who doesn't regret taping or recording those impromptu Remmel stories.

 

Remmel had a particularly close banter with quarterback Brett Favre, whom he often introduced as "Brett Lorenzo Favre." Favre in turn often teased the shorter, white-haired Remmel, often mimicking the deep baritone voice with a, "Leland."

 

Remmel always had a retort. Favre replaced Don Hutson as Remmel's all-time favorite player.

 

"He's always had a great sense of humor, too," Favre said in 2007. "We loved to give each other a hard time. I cherish our friendship."

 

Remmel's wife of 61 years, Noreen, passed away April 27, 2012. He and his wife served as honorary co-chairs of the annual Brown County Humane Society's 'Fur Ball' in 2000, 2001 and 2004, and were members of the executive committee of the Brown County Civic Music Association. Lee also served on the executive board of the 65 Roses Sports Club (cystic fibrosis) and the board of directors of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame Inc.

I remember when I lived near Green Bay and the network pregame shows were only 30 minutes long back in the 80s (and were actually watchable...hmmm, maybe there's some correlation---and dare I say causation--there). Channel 4 in GB would have a half hour pregame show before that and it would always feature a trivia question asked (and answered) by Lee Remmel. Usually they were along the lines of "What were the three things remarkable about the 1983 Green Bay-Tampa Bay game in Florida?" and the answers usually featured something that wasn't all that remarkable, like "linebacker John Anderson recovered two fumbles in the third quarter, making him the first defensive player for the Packers to do so since Fred Carr ten years earlier". Then everyone employed by the station would give their picks on air for the week's game, which would invariably be for the Packers even if they were playing the 1985 Bears or were 0-6 on the year.

 

 

RIP, Lee.

Clearly, the Packers are in little need of a superstar player from this year's draft, so they did what all good teams do. They load up on depth and special teams players. Montgomery has a great shot to be the #1 return man. Brett Hundley is definitely a project, and Mike McCarthy loves QB projects. Ripkowski is most probably heir to John Kuhn, and Jake Ryan has a good chance to play inside LB.

 

Needing ILB's, the Packers apparently stayed true to their Big Board and drafted players rated higher than the available ILB's in the first two rounds. Above all, the Packers' secondary was the focal point of the draft, as the departures of Tramon Williams and Davon House forced the issue.

 

With many undrafted players being signed already, the Packers' training camp will be greatly competitive. Players want to play for the Green & Gold!

What is the tradition? While the Packers are in training camp, they leave the locker rooms at the stadium, kids line up with their bikes, and the players ride the kids' bikes to the practice field, chatting with them as the walk beside them along the way. Many players have kids they look for season after season, and they form a pretty tight bond. It's really nice and something the NFL needs to promote to balance out all the negative shit.
