QUOTE (Janie @ Jun 21 2010, 04:31 PM)
Just got back from a two-hour meeting at Seattle Children's Hospital regarding Junior #1. He needs a talking device he can use all the time, not just at school. We discussed the pros and cons of all the talking devices out there and watched him use all the models. Two were easy for him to use but one was a clear winner. Insurance will only pay for one so we need one that will grow with him (for him to use for at least five more years). So, that was a bit of a challenge. The device we went with is very cool. We all have to be able to use it and it seems pretty easy to master. It's obvious he needs one and thank god our insurance will cover the cost which is just shy of $10,000. Hopefully we'll get it by the end of August.

Ten thousand dollars. I am floored. But thank god your insurance is covering it.

I think of you and your little one a lot, Janie, and I pray he'll be able to find his real voice.

And you've done a great job, being attentive and getting on top of it early and really putting your back into working with him and the specialists. If I were a baby, I would like to have you as a mom. laugh.gif

I couldn't believe the price tag either! The devices are pretty cool and they can do so much! I was amazed at how many items were stored. They come with 4,000 words and images and you can input more items yourself. One tap on a picture immediately takes you to another screen, tap, another screen and very quickly you've formed a sentence.

It has been such a long road. I knew the minute he was born something was up. He has been in therapy since he was 3 months old. And it's looking like he'll be in therapy for a very long time. Thank god I am a stay-at-home-home.

Your last comment was funny. I've had friends say the same thing! "Can you please be my mom!?" I've had people stop me at the grocery store, at restaurants and other places commenting about my momness. Makes me feel good. wub.gif I love my kids. I totally enjoy being a mom even though Junior #1 with all of his conditions has kept me up many nights crying my eyes out.

Hi dear

for real now ok? Anybody ever mentioned how really deeply touching your stories about you and your family are? And the roller coaster you call life you journalize so so well here. We are there with you with every word flying off your fingertips

Why not organize them into a helpful book for other moms and families facing your dilemmas?

it's a helluva read here...................

First day of work today at my new job. My shift got switched from 2pm to 5pm which means I'm prolly closing. Not bad.. the tips will prolly be sweet. smile.gif I'm a lil nervous... excited too.

It went pretty good. As soon as I walked into the place to start my shift Time Stand Still was on and later Caravan and then New World Man came on. My workplace plays Q107 from Toronto which made me feel a lil more at home in this place that is so different.

Aw, thanks BOB. wub.gif That means a lot to me.

I've thought about doing some sort of a support group/blog/website/something for others who have children with apraxia. There is hardly anything out there now. Lord knows it would be nice to have a good resource and outlet, both for myself and others. Maybe I'll give this some serious thought.

Question. Is speech apraxia the same condition that used to be just labeled as "mute", back before the age of enlightenment?

That's an interesting thought Mara. I don't know. I believe if someone is mute, they are completely incapable of producing sound. I don't know what percentage of children born with severe speech apraxia don't produce any kind of sound.

I met and talked to a wonderful wopman who gave me one of those rubber wrist bands. It is purple and says "I GET TO" on it.

The story behind this band is touching. It involves her daughter dying of leukemia and her campaign to change peoples vocabularyr from I HAVE TO to I GET TO as a celebration of being alive.

Her website is weGETto.com

I met and talked to a wonderful woman, Denise Taylor, who gave me one of those rubber wrist bands(you know like Lance Armstong's that says LIVESTRONG). It is purple and says "I GET TO" on it.

I have no vested interest in this, just passing along a bright moment in my life.

As we don't have a, "What made you realize you spend a lot of time on the computer" thread, I'll post this here...

I am ten posts away from hitting the 10,000 mark.

Ten.

Thousand.

And probably 8,000 of those posts have been about how hot Alex is!

I'm helping my sister because she had knee surgery last week. Most of the help revolves around letting her Westie in and out of the house. She is put in the kitchen when we leave so if she has to pee, or leave a puddle, it won't be on the carpet.

So, this afternoon, she was barking so that she could be let out, and I was helping my sister, and the dog had to wait a minute.

She put herself in the kitchen and closed the gate. rofl3.gif

Try hitting 20,112 posts...and realizing how much time THAT equates to...

Not that anybody noticed my great accomplishment. fists crying.gif

Oh, and is your son getting a Dynavox? Stephen has been at a tech camp this week and has used one, and we're going to try to get one for him, too.

After looking over about five or so models, we decided to go with the Vantage Lite.
