if it wasn't for Rush trying too hard, we wouldn't be having this discussion today.

The historic importance of this does not necessarily reflect the quality though. Yes, 2112 broke them...but it wasn't their first epic song, not their last....and because it might've been their most timely, it doesn't automatically make it the best one. Or even terribly good for that matter.

 

It's probably their most critical epic, however. That I won't disagree with. That's different than "best" though.

I agree - 2112 sounds forced. Hemispheres was completely different, and BEAUTIFUL.

This is strange. I guess that I ave a difficult time considering most of these as epics...9 minutes does not seem to epic to me...just my opinion.

What's epic when it comes to popular music? Heck, it can be argued that anything over 5 minutes can be considered epic. What's the average length of a rock song? 3 minutes? 4 minutes? If so, a 9 minute song is double the average, so I think the term epic applies.
