I recently got interested in odd time signatures, I wonder why? wink.gif

Does anyone have list of Rush songs and the time signatures they are in? For example (I'm just making this up)

Freewill: 7/8, 4/4, 7/8

etc.

Rush doesnt really do a lot of odd time signatures. It's mostly 4/4, with the occational 6/4, 7/8, pretty basic stuff. But they make 4/4 seem off sometimes with odd drumbeats, but its still 4/4 most of the time.

If you're getting into odd time signatures and love prog music that is very difficult to play, might want to check out The Mars Volta. Neil is actually a big fan of theirs, thats how I found out about them.

Their stuff is far more complex than Rush ever was, and some of the time signatures are unbelievably odd, but they find ways to make them work.

Rush is full of Odd Meters.

Circumstances has 70 time changes. mostly these: 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 3/8, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8

Losing It is in 11/8.

Kid Gloves is in 5/4 alternating with 4/4.

Both books of Cygnus are packed with odd meters: 6/4, 7/4, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8, 11/8, 12/8

Superconductor is in a very danceable 7/4, alternating with 4/4.

Jacob's ladder is in a myriad of changing meters, namely: 5/4, 6/4, 6/8, 7/8.

Subdivisions is mostly in 7/8.

And that's in an 8 or 9 album streak.

That's just a few off the top of my head, but I am certain there is more.

Im noticing a lot of prog bands these says doing halves, something I dont think Rush ever did. Mars Volta does it a lot and its very awkward sometimes but they make it work, really cool stuff, I think Tool does sometimes too. Their song schism uses some weird 6.5/4 time. I remember them talking about that.

There is no such thing as a 6.5/4 time signature. That's just how Tool is labeling it. 6.5/4 would actually=13/8*

And yes I'm being an annoying nerd. smile.gif

The main riff in Schism is simply 5/8 and 7/8 alternating.

*6.5 quarter notes=13 eighth notes.

ANY time signature exists, there are no rules. You can actually play in 6.5 time or any half time. Ive got their official notation book and its labelled as 6.5/4.

Just because Rush has never done it doesnt mean it doesnt exist.

Yeah I guess technically there are no rules but 6.5/4 is simply 13/8.Calling it 6.5/4 just complicates matters.I mean how would you count 6.5/4?

"Just because Rush has never done it..."

Please.I'm well aware.
