Based on previous releases what did you expect? Of course, you will have higher expectations for some groups than others. For example, I had the highest of expectations for the new PT but pretty low for the new DT. I'll Start: The Mars Volta- Octahedron- fell short Dream Theater- BC & SL- exceeded my expectations by a long shot. Porcupine Tree- The Incident- fell short Mastodon- Crack The Skye- expectations met Between the buried and me- the great misdirect- expectations met Megadeth- Endgame- mixed feelings about this one but will say expectations met? the music is great however the lyrics are pretty weak. Two new discs that I had no expectations for because I had never heard them but were excellent are : Scale The Summit- Carving Desert Canyons Animals as Leaders. EmotionDetector Posted October 29, 2009 Share Posted October 29, 2009 Hmmm...well, there is one I can comment on for sure: KISS - 'Sonic Boom' Absolutely exceeded my expectations! I figured it would be a pretty decent offering, but I had no idea that they would be able to pull off such a strong rockin' record this late in their career. 11 songs, and I consider all of them to be strong. Not 1 dud on the record, and I was happy to see Paul take control of the project as he is the cornerstone of the band when it comes to the MUSIC. Kudos to Paul, Gene, Tommy, and Eric for putting together such a stellar piece of work. Sonic Boom is certainly as good of a comeback as you could've asked for. F*ck Buttons - Tarot Sport -could be album of the year, the best electronic album of the year The Mars Volta - Octahedrom - exceeded - I like the more melodic approach Transatlantic - The Whirlwind - too early to say, but very impressed so far. The Duckworth Lewis Method - very impressed, exceeded. Peter Hammill - Thin Air - as excellent as you would expect Eureka - Shackleton's Voyage - piss weak Euro prog - shit on a stick The Low Anthem - Oh My God Charlie Darwin - met, jolly good Riverside - Anno Domini - brilliant - exceeded Doves - Kingdom of Rust - very good, as expected The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love - prefer Crane Wife, but still very good A Camp - Colonia - expected excellence, expectations met Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion - incredible - exceeded Bell X1 - Blue Lights on the Runway - best Irish album of the year Bat For Lashes - Two Suns - load of old dribble - very poor Marillion - Less Is More - wonderful, but of course Bob Dylan - Together Through Life - wonderful, but of course II That'll do for now. Too many new release coming out, and one's that might change my mind about other albums. I know for a fact I'll compare Biffy Clyro's new album to Muse's, and from hearing the songs live Biffy are showing Muse up to be incredibly pedestrian, almost boring and most certainly playing it far too safe. Some of you may have bought so much new music that it would be a huge pain in the ass to list it all, so feel free just to mention various standouts too. Another new release that I have yet to pick is the new Ozric Tentacles and for that i give it a fell short of expectations, in that i expected to be able to buy the new disc at the show. For me, yeah, a new release can have a bearing on your expectation of an album. I'll go back to my Muse example. I expect great melodies and near-bone crunching riffs, and while I got that from The Resistance and loved it when it was first released, hearing the stuff from Biffy reminds me of how much louder, melodic, beautiful and rocking Muse can be so that's put a tad of a downer on the album. The Resistance has still met my expectations, but it could have done so much more. Wait until the period of time between December 25th and December 31st and I'll explain in greater detail.
