HowItIs
QUOTE (Jaminbenb @ Jan 11 2012, 07:35 AM) The BEST tribute band I've ever seen was Musical Box! (Genesis) They did The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, in costume, AND with some of the original film that Genesis used and it was AMAZING! I saw that last year. They were amazing!! QUOTE I still prefer 'The Original'. Well, of course! We all do. But they don't play as often as the tribute bands

trenken
I havent. Dont think I ever would even if it was free. I cant stand watching bands try to cover Rush if they are actually trying to sound like them. Only Rush covers I can stand are people that do something different and original with them, like what that Jacob Moon guy did. I could definitely go see him play Rush songs, but I couldnt care less about a real tribute band. Not just of Rush, but of any band. Id rather just watch Rush live DVDs and go see original bands in concert. Just my opinion on it though.

The weirdest thing I ever saw was at a wedding, during the part of the night when they were getting people to come up for the bouquet and garter toss the band started playing (and repeating) the beginning part of Cygnus X-1 as the lead singer prompted people to come up. I ran into the drummer a the bar after the break and asked him about it, he said they used to mess around with it when they were practicing to break the monotony of the crazy wedding songs, and the lead singer said it would be good for just killing time like that... jdouglas
I was in afterimage for a short time. I think they are a very good rush tribute band in Philly. They are playing the rusty nail in early Feb. I probably will stop in to see them. http://www.afterimageband.com/front.html Certainly not a huge female following for Rush tribute bands, but the music is always a blast to play. Enviro_tech
I saw Burlington based 2112, seen here http://2112.ca/main.html , at the Burlington Sound of Music Festival a few years back.. Wicked awesome drum set up, it was the full kit, every nut, bone, stick, cymbals, it was amazing.. The guy could play just like Neil too! The bass player was Geddy, he did the singing, the keys, pedals, the whole 9 yards. Was a real treat to watch him at work. The guitarist, I want to say it wasn't the original guitarist I think, but I may be totally wrong on that, he was pretty good. He had good guitar skills, I just wasn't a fan of the guitar tone he had, it sounded a bit too synthetic to my ears. The drums were also poorly mic'd, but I think that's what you expect with an outdoor show and probably very little set up time for such a huge kit. So I looked past most of the flaws in sound aspects. I felt kinda bad for the guys, there were only a handful of Rush fans, most were there for the next act an AC/DC cover band, who didn't appreciate Rush as much as a Rush fan like myself did. Overall it was enjoyable watching a Rush cover band, I thought they did a great job, but just wish the crowd had been a lil more appreciative. I guess the Classic Albums Live series might fall under Rush 'cover' bands, maybe?? They plugged it as "note for note cut for cut", they did deliver. 2112 was absolutely amazing, the drummer broke the snare at the end of Overture, he had to install the spare before Temples. The main guitarist, Dave Barrett, he had Alex's actual 355 and EDS-1275 doubleneck, the latter he still has on loan from Alex for his work with DB3. I got to play that doubleneck last month as part of a Rocket Hub exchange, a very cool guitar. Although it's hard to see the six string neck. It took me a while to get used to the 'neck change' switch. As Alex said he doesn't like the weight, after I put it down and picked up my trusty go to Godin, I was picking up air pretty much. I digress... The bassist had a Rickenbacker, I remember thinking that was the coolest thing ever, and the singer, while he gave it a great shot at getting to Geddy's hi pitch, I thought he fell a little short. There were also two other back-up guitarists providing extra guitars in the songs. Very tight players, it was Rush through and through! Now, Moving Pictures was the second CAL show I saw, had some problems. The sound was ear piercing loud, to the point of reading comments later that many people asked the sound guy to turn it down. The PA must have reached overload, the left hand side went out. For Vital Signs there was a problem with the synthesizer, unfortunately they didn't get it fixed. But, it was mostly the same musicians again, so very tight performances. This time, the vocalist didn't try to nail Geddy and I felt he did a much better job singing in his own range. There was a lack of Alex's real gear on stage, but that didn't matter one bit. And the encore Rush montage of songs, oh big highlight of the night. Still wish they did Rush CAL a few more times. Lerxst UK
People really should get out and support the worlds Rush tribs, it's a great night out. Despite appearances, most don't take themselves very seriously at all... even if they do go for a bit of 'cheese' and do the look-alike thing to some extent... its all part of the fun... a bit of TIC 'pantomime' if you like. It's not some deluded wierdos thinking they're Rush reincarnate (as far as know anyhow)! Rather, the point is its a bunch of Rush fans both on and off stage celebrating this fine music in an alternative format. A lot of the fun is not just in seeing the bands... it's meeting and talking to other Rush fans in the flesh... a great 'real world' alternative to facelessly typing out stuff on tribute forum sites like this one. Its a mistake to judge the bands by the low quality footage you can find on Youtube because the whole thing is geared up to live performance and a lot relies on the atmosphere of the event which cheap phones and camcorders can't capture... and needless to say a beer or three helps to 'suspend our disbelief' and enhance the experience....! I do think the interweb has eroded the live music scene to some degree because lots of people do seek out footage/reviews on MyTubeFace etc before deciding on whether go and see bands... whereas in the good old days you just got out there and took ya chances! I've played guitar (and bass pedals) in 3 Rush tribs over the last 10 years. We set out as a travelling band doing some of the bigger venues and theatres but always struggled to get the support we needed (in terms of audience size) to make that plausible. Naturally most venues are reluctant to book what they deem to be 'specialist bands' with limited pull. But there's so many Rush fans out there it shouldn't be that way! Our current band is called Whey Aye Zed (a play on words for YYZ... 'whey aye man' is a commonly used term in the Newcastle area (we're known as Geordies) which basically means 'of course'... example - 'Do you fancy going to the local pub to watch a Rush trib tonight and down a few beers?' the reply would/should be a definite 'whey aye man!!!'. We just stick to playing our local area these days because we know we can get a decent turnout most times here abouts. There's footage of several tracks on Youtube if anyone is interested.... The bands can only achieve so much without the help and support of other fans though. Most bands put in a fantastic amount of hard work to produce a listenable and enjoyable show. No band will ever recreate Rush 100% but there's some good efforts out there all the same! So do yourself a favour and get along to one or two shows.. even if you have to travel a bit. We're not going to fool anybody into thinking that they're going to a Rush show. There's another band that (still) does that. We just try to put on a show that we, as Rush fans, would enjoy, with the hope that other fans will like it too.
metallithrax
Saw a band called PNR here in Wakefield UK. This was around 1986-1990. They played Rush and Police songs mainly. They were good, don't think they are around any more.
jnoble
I've said it before, I'll say it again...the biggest deal breaker for a Rush tribute band is the singer. And most of them just sound like a guy doing a passable to horrid imitation of Geddy instead of singing in a more natural tone.
