There's lots of color pictures showing every step of tying each knot. There are knots like the Turk's Head and Monkey's Fist that I have always wanted to know how to tie and thanks to this book I have gained the skill! treeduck Posted June 24, 2009 Share Posted June 24, 2009 Dean Koontz - Phantoms - Dean ® Koontz's first really good thriller http://img54.imageshack.us/img54/3279/phantomsold.jpg I first read this in 1988 and at the time it was a state of the art thriller with Intel probably getting it's first ever mention in fiction (the book was first published in 1983). It's full of interesting ideas and it's basically one of Dean's "what if" novels, where he tries to explain the many mass disappearances in history by creating his own mass disappearance in early 1980s California. Fortunately Dean drops a lot of the schmucky humour he laced his early novels with and just gets on with the story which is fast paced and interesting. The main strength of this novel and all Dean's best novels is that the situation he creates makes the reader wonder just what the hell is going on and therefore you read on as quickly as possible to finally find out. It's not as good as I remembered but it's still a pretty good thriller, with a high gore factor, good science knowledge (for the day), reasonable characters (for the genre - sci-fi thriller) good suspense, a creepy/spooky atmosphere and a satisfying ending. 7/10 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Whoever can keep their hand on the car the longest wins the car. At fist, I didn't get into the book (super long chapters, going off on thoughts...) but by the end, it was SO good. The character interaction and development was spot-on and really gets your brain working. Twists and turns throughout that you wouldn't expect. 9/10. treeduck Posted July 14, 2009 Share Posted July 14, 2009 I just re-read Carl Hiaasn's first solo eco-thriller/Florida black comedy from 1986, Tourist Season. I first read it back in 1992 and later, after reading his latest stuff of the time (up to Native Tongue) I thought then that this one was the best of the bunch and I still think so. However, I wasn't as impressed with this one as I was back in the day. It wasn't quite as funny or as entertaining as I remembered. I particularly noticed that his anti-hero/villain Skip Wiley didn't seem quite so ingenious and witty, nor did his wacky eco-terrorist scheme seem to be so cleverly thought out, in fact it seemed a bit ridiculous and a little pointless. Carl's collection of crazy characters themselves didn't seem so cleverly designed in fact, so that was a little disappointing. It rambled all over the place, and the protagonist was a study in annoying social stupidity. I cannot believe I stuck with it long enough to finish it. It's full of all kinds of literary and historical allusions, but these are just kind of heavy and unnatural and way. too. much. Don't recommend. Bill expounds on his relationship with Red Auerbach through anecdotes outlining their mutual respect and shared philosophies. Bill also gives a lot of props to his father's hard work and values. Overall it's not bad, but it's tale of two halves. The first half is slow and a wee bit boring with too much research on display, which made it hard work.
