They're playing at a casino nearby. Are they even worth it without Wakeman & Anderson?

NO :finbar:

YES!

What else are you going to do? Sit home and watch TV? The ticket prices aren't bad. Go see Yes!

Nah, I decided against it. They're 100 miles away, cost $70 and don't even have Jon Anderson. I'll pass for now.

I saw them live with Benoit and it was a major disappointment. Didnt even stay for roundabout (not that that's one of my faves anyway, but if Jon was there id def stay)

The only reason why i dont regret going entirely is because steve howe's playing in "And You and I" did reach me, and that was a good moment.

And it wasn't because Jon disagreed with them or didn't want to perform. He got ill and they replaced him. Then he got better and wanted to come back and they said no. Then they replaced their replacement with another replacement. He still wants to come back.

Famous musicians can be ruthless when it comes to anyone who holds them back, or down or stands in their way. I suppose that's how they got where they are.

The story you have told about Jon and Yes I have already heard before concerning other famous bands.

Yeah. This following video gives me mixed feelings. Jon is more than a great singer and songwriter, he's such a cool guy.

Controversial opinion time here.

Awaken > Close to the Edge.

Hard to pick between those two really... but I do think:

Going For The One > Close To The Edge

I read that at one point they were ending the song on the quiet part where they sing they "two million people barely satisfied" and it would fade out with the "I get up, I get down" phrase, but the song was way too short to fill an album side so the bombastic part towards the end that does ultimately end the song was from an earlier version. They thought that when they spliced the new ending on that it was so obvious the record company would know and complain, but no one ever noticed. It blows my mind that they did it all while touring and with analog tape and God knows how many drugs. Producer and engineer Eddy Offord was on heroin. They had talent and ambitious ideas, but the vision came from Jon Anderson and that is what they could still benefit from.

I'm still a fan of Fly From Here and the new album sounds promising, but I hope Jon Anderson returns after these 60ish and 70ish grown flipping men bury the hatchet and get it together.

What I have heard about it was that they were 3/4 of the way through the song, writing it as they went, and no one seemed to know how it was going to end. It was Wakeman who suggested that they employ recapitulation, and the last part would be a summary of the main points that had happened at the beginning of the song. And so you get the organ solo over a frenetic rhythm section, another verse, and then a grand chorus that leads to a fade out much the same way the song faded in.

I wouldn't rank Awaken above Endless Dream, let alone Close to the Edge or The Gates of Delirium. I do like it, but my favorite parts are the intense sections it runs through early on, and I don't find the rest of it to be as moving or as powerful as everyone else seems to.

As for assessing and comparing the albums, I consider Close to the Edge a perfect record, so while I do like every track on Going for the One (to varying extents), it just isn't in the same league.

To clarify, just in case, I mean the albums and not the title tracks.

Going for the One, Turn of the Century, and Awaken alone give the Close to the Edge album a challenge.

Throw in the other two GFTO tracks (parallels / wondrous) and even the great bonus tracks we later see (vevey / montreux), and it's no contest for me.

Nah, it's not even close. Although Awaken is perfection and Wonderous Stories is a great track I'd grant you that.

I agree that it isn't particularly close, though the three tracks you don't mention are my favorites on there. :) Parallels in particular is fantastic. I can't listen to that one and not get pumped up.

Eh, I'm in the camp that's never "gotten" Gates of Delirium. It's a pretty good song and all, but it's one of those songs where I only really like certain sections of it instead of the whole thing.

Now, the mid-section when it gets all quiet and then Jon starts singing and things get kicked up a notch? That always gets me.

I love everything about Gates of Delirium. That solo section is outstanding, I remember when walking in and through high school every morning I'd listen to that part on repeat.

...Now I do listen to the song in it's entirety

I lost YES after Relayer. Never got into GFTO, Tormato, etc. I did like Big Generator. Fish out of Water and Olias are fantastic !!!

Gates ? Steve Howe's pedal steel leading into Soon, worth the price of admission.

You're doing yourself a disservice, revisit and re-evaluate immediately! Relayer > GFTO > Tormato :)

When I was in 11th grade, I had a a little Ritual involving Relayer. Every morning before I left my house to walk to the bus stop, I'd put my Walkman headphones on, and press play as I stepped out the door. Gates of Delerium would start, and it would finish just as I was getting off the bus to walk in to school. In the afternoon, when the bus started rolling, I'd play side two. Since it was shorter, it wouldn't last my whole walk home.

Yeah, that section is particularly strong in the Yesshows version of the song.

I like just about every aspect of Gates, especially the little melodies at the beginning, Jon's vocals in the first third, and Moraz's keys during the battle segment (Moraz was a real hero on Relayer). Soon is actually the part I enjoy listening to the least, but it's the perfect way to cap things off.

I rank Going for the One a bit higher than Relayer, as I find it more consistent, but yeah, all three of those are good records.
