Well i see you know what your'e talking about Jack.. LOL.. Didn't expect anyone to recognice the ship even.. Good work Jack..

I'll redo that if you just tell me what the mizzenmast and the bowsprit are.. I'm no sailor just an artist.. wink.gif Next time I just use some old pirateship maybe.. But I think the colors sute her..

And if you can be the Captain maybe you'll stop that whinyeing.. (How's that spelled anyway..)

You're all right! laugh.gif It's spelled whining, by the way.

Don't worry about the ship, it's cool. But I do think I'd make a pretty good Captain. cool.gif

HEY angry.gif

I'm not so sure about that anymore tongue.gif

According to these other pictures I found they flag it as I do, except for the colors.. wink.gif I'll have to let you start as a seaman, the deck needs cleaning and there is a lot of potatoes to peel... rofl3.gif

Take a look at mine again from another angle.. And then go below deck and start peeling and stop whining. (thanks for the spelling).

http://i36.tinypic.com/2db5tuu.jpg

Oooops, I forgot admin.gif... Bye bolt.gif

doh.gif Yeah, you're right technically. If I recall correctly, the rules I stated are for ships underway and not at anchor. Since Victory's sails are furled in your picture, it's logical to assume she's at anchor. I also got the mizzenmast and the mainmast confused, I always do that.

I'll go swab the deck now, sir. As for the potatoes, don't you know that they're healthier with the peels left on? That's where all the vitamins are. laugh.gif

Some nice stuff here, but I have a question: is this only for Rush-related 3D art?

The reason I ask is that I'm dabbling in 3D CG art myself, but none of it is Rush-related. I'd like to post some links to my stuff that's posted over at Sci-Fi Meshes. I haven't done anything within the past few months though, 'cause I got a bit burned out on it, but I'm starting to look at picking up where I left off.

My app of choice is Blender, a completely free, open source modelling program with it's own renderer. It's a bit different from most apps in how you do things, but seeing as it's free and there are some good tutorials for it, it's what I use.

Here's a link to the Blender site: http://www.blender.org/

Anyway, if it's cool, I'll post some links to my stuff tomorrow.

Cool.. Thanks for the Blender link and yes feel free to post your stuff here, if you see my last post, it's not rush-related, my daughters birthdaycard. I do other stuff too but been a lot of Rush-related art lately...

I use Carrara, Bryce and Daz.. Daz is also free and can be found at this link.

Going to check that Blender software, always nice to try new software to play with and I'm looking forward to see your work. Know all about that burned out feeling you got, I've been out of inspiration for a while too.

See you around MaxxQ...

Well, since I got an answer so quick (and since it's been "tomorrow" for the past 2 hours and 9 minutes), here's links to my work at SFM:

http://www.scifi-meshes.com/forums/3d-wips...tle-joe-ii.html

http://www.scifi-meshes.com/forums/3d-wips...spaceplane.html

http://www.scifi-meshes.com/forums/3d-wips...-revisited.html

These works are the sum total of everything I've ever done in 3D, and if you read through the threads, you'll note one common thing: I don't do textures because 1) I haven't learned how, and 2) I still don't know how to do anything in Paint Shop Pro except crop photos.

The only thing that was ever completed is in the first link.

The ELO stuff, I stopped on it because I was having all kinds of problems with the saucer.

The third link, shows the last thing I was working on before I got burned out, and aside from getting a bit tired of it, I also got involved in a project that I can't talk about. I basically haven't touched Blender since my last post in that thread.

Oh...last thing. If anyone is tempted to comment in the threads there, don't. Those threads are several months old, and that board frowns on what they call "necroposting" - bringing a thread back from the dead.

Okay...my fault. I didn't realize you HAD to be a member at SFM just to view stuff.

Gimme a couple hours and I'll get something up somewhere that I can hotlink to.

Unless I missed the area where we can upload pics here? Can I, or is that too much bandwidth for TRF?

Either way, I'll just set up a Photobucket account. I don't really like it, but...

Just keep the pics a reasonable size. Say no bigger than what Per has posted.

No you can't upload here as far as I know.. Why don't you like to put up an Photobucket-account.. You can set it to private if you don't want people to see your stuff.. It's really necessary if you want to post pics and stuff here..

You'll find it useful in the future I think..

Okay. That won't be a problem.

As to why I don't like PB...it's mainly because what little experience I've had with it is more where someone has just posted a link to it, rather than linking the pic inside the thread/post. Popups all over, even with a couple different popup blockers.

Don't worry though, I'll do it. Like I said, give me a couple hours to do some resizing/cropping (some are at my monitor's resolution of 1650x1080) and get them uploaded.

See ya in a few...

Alright, let's see what happens here. I went with Flickr, rather than Photobucket, mainly because my sister and my daughter use it.

This mesh is the first thing I ever completed in 3D modelling. It's a CG redering of the Little Joe II, used during the development of the Apollo/Saturn V project for the first lunar landing. The LJII was used for testing the emergency escape system for the astronauts in the event of a failure of one form or another during the boost phase of a launch.

I won't go into more detail, but if asked, then I'll expand. Anyway, here's the finished mesh:

Here is the link for various WIP (work in progress) images:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/30016483@N05/...57607018142839/

Click on the thumbnail, then click on All Sizes above the pic that shows up, to see the full-size render.

Also, here's a real world model I built from scratch of the LJII. It was intended to fly, but it got trashed during a family move, and I didn't have the money or time to rebuild it. It's 1/10 the size of the real thing.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3103/2810167062_60556283d5_o.jpg

I hope these pics aren't too big...

Edit: HOT DIGGITY!!! It worked. 653.gif

Edit #2: Gonna take me a little longer than I thought to get the other stuff up, but I promise some more tonight. Patience, please. smile.gif

Second set of work(s). This is my attempt to recreate the cover of ELO's Out of the Blue album cover. I got the spaceplane mostly finished before I gave it up. I wanted to put in a cockpit, rig the bay doors to open, and eventually do an animation.

BTW, anytime you see a green box in any of my renders, it's scaled to represent a six-foot tall human. I do that to show the scale of what's being modeled.

The saucer as shown is about as far as I got. If I ever pick it up again, I'll have to basically start all over, because I've learned so much more about how to use Blender since I did these.

Now for the piccy, and the link to the other in-progress renders.

Edit: The last batch is gonna take awhile. I've got TONS (at least 25 or so) of renders to upload at Flickr, then add comments about some of them.

OOOPS! I found another mesh I was working on, so I figured I'd load it up as well, THEN I'll move on to the other one.

This is the ship from the animated movie Starchaser: The Legend of Orin. The story is pretty much a ripoff of Star Wars (Ep. 4), but the ship itself is pretty cool.

Okay...next to last batch of renders.

These are my imaginings of the Superdreadnought (Pod)-class of ships from David Weber's Honor Harrington series of books. It's military science fiction based on C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower (whom Honor is modeled on) books, and in the early half of the series, roughly mirrors the geopolitics and age-of-sail naval tactics of the Napoleonic era. There are a total of 11 books in the main series (featuring Weber's heroine, Honor Harrington), two separate spin-off series with one book each that overlap with the main series, and four books of novellas and short stories set in the Honorverse, written by Weber and other authors. The twelfth book of the main series, and the second books of each of the spin-offs are due to come out over the next year and a half or so.

This particular SD(P) is an Invictus-class ship. There's not a lot of detailed descriptions of this ship available, since it's first mentioned in the last book of the main series (where it's still in the design/construction phase), so I've just tried to extrapolate previous technology and merge it with what little info IS available. If anyone's interested, I'll answer any questions regarding the ship(s), weapons, etc.

The first image below shows most of an overall view of the ship, with the pod bay doors open at the aft end, chaser weapons (missile launchers, lasers, grasers, countermissile launchers, and point defense lasers) in firing positions, and broadside armaments (lasers, grasers, CM launchers, and PD lasers) deployed. You can also see the auxilary maneuvering thrusters at the forward edge of the hammerhead, as well as various sensors and targeting systems.

In the top right corner, you can see at the forward edge of the taper, a ring with some bumps on it. This is one-half of the main drive system - the other half is hidden by the aft hammerhead (the near end). If you look VERY closely at the extreme bottom left corner, at the bottom of the pod bay opening, you can just barely make out Mr. Green Box. He's much more visible in the large image.

One last thing: no snickering comments about what it looks like. I've heard them all biggrin.gif I can't help it if the author imagined his ships looking that way, and due to the "physics" he uses in the Honorverse, pretty much all warships, regardless of which star nation uses, designs, or builds them, will have the same general layout, differing only in weapons configuration/loadout, sensor placement, and so on.

So, here's the first pic:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3099/2810446024_989c443db2.jpg

The second pic shows the types and sizes of weapons used on the Invictus. I recommend checking out the full-size version for easier reading. None of the models have been "smoothed", which is why they look "faceted".

Note Mr. Green standing on top of the missile pod.

As always, the link to the rest of the pics:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/30016483@N05/...in/photostream/

I have one more batch to upload, but I think I'll do that tomorrow sometime.

Geometry...and it was my first time trying to panel, so there were MANY rejects. All panelling and coloration I do is either geomtry or procedural materials, since I can't UVmap. It's not that Blender won't let me, "I" just don't know how, even with some really good tutorials. Not to mention, I don't know how to use PSP, the Gimp, or any other software of that type to do more than crop and resize. One thing at a time, I suppose...

Edit: For a really good tutorial series on using Blender, I recommend going to SFM, signing up, and look in (I think) The Dojo forum. Look for the "Blending for the Faint Hearted" series of tuts by Sphynx. They're what I used to learn the basics. They're also a couple years old, and Blender's been through a few updates since then, but it's still close enough that you shouldn't have any trouble figuring it out.

Awesome work MaxxQ... Now I understand why you got kind of burned out.. LOL.. The details is amazing, I'm way to lazy to do that kind of stuff any more, well maybe I find some inspiration in your work so..

Great you posted them here, happy to find more folks interested in 3D CG.. I took a fast glance at Blender and it seems great.. Just got me Carrara a couple of months back and is trying to learn that so I don't think I got time for Blender right now although I would like to learn it all.. LOL comp26.gif

And Hunter you maybe got something to show us too.. C'mon post it... popcorn.gif

Thanks. Yeah, it's true when they say the devil is in the details. That Invictus went through a couple of major redesigns (you might be able to tell if you look at the weapons configurations and the weapons hatch layouts in all the pics at the Flickr link - they change about halfway through), and I think I rebuilt the main hull at least 4 or 5 times.

Those renders represent about 2-3 months work, not including the month or more I spent working on the Medusa class before I started the Invictus. The Invictus is basically a Medusa minus the broadside missile tubes.

Besides getting burned out, another reason I stopped working on them is my current comp can't handle a full-up render. Well, it CAN handle the render, but getting things set up is a lesson in patience. When I have all the energy weapons deployed, a couple of salvos of pods, and some missiles set up, then turn smoothing on, the polycount jumps to around 2 million plus. Trying to maneuver the camera around is like trying to play Crysis with all the bells and whistles turned on on a three year old computer.

The renders take about 30-45 minutes, and that's just the basic clay renders that I've shown (with only three lights - not including the ones inside the pod bay - 12 of those). I dread to think what it'll be like when (if) I ever finish them and maybe try to do an animation - 24 hours for a single second of screen time? At least...
