is what I want to achieve in portrait shots....I want the subject to be beautiful and sharp, and the background to be completely out of focus....how do I accomplish this?!?!?!?!?!  fists crying.gif

F/1.4

Is such a magic number...

fists crying.gif I WANT TO SHOOT f/1.4!!!! Even if I get to borrow my best friends XSi, I would have to buy a lens that goes to that aperture sad.gif

You can go cheap and get the F/1.8 And you know? It takes pictures just a nice. Just a few problems though:

- it's not built as nice

- not Ultrasnoic, so the focus is a tad louder and slower

- uglier looking

- no MF (So I hear)

but it's only $100, as opposed to $400.

yeah...I have to wait til I actually own one to justify buying a lens. I know Dave won't be pleased if I say I want to buy a lens for a camera I don't even own sad.gif

The longer you wait, the older he gets, and the moment will pass. Ryan is VERY tough to photograph. I don't have many posed photos of him for a reason - he doesn't sit still and he'll purposely run from the camera and make a game out of it. Actually I don't enjoy taking photos of him (but I do enjoy the photos).

The good thing about the portrait lens is that it is FAST. Fast as hell. The G9 can't keep up with Ryan at all. I really struggle with that, but you know it's still a great camera.

Yeah, I know - it's totally killing me that I didn't just save up the extra $$ and just get an SLR when I was thinking about the G9. I just don't have the money, and our next tax refund is going to buying something nice for Dave, and the rest is being saved for a downpayment on a house.....My friend Justine is going to give me her Nikon D40 (so long as she gets her settlement), and all I'll have to do is buy lenses for it...but I'm so used to using Canon now, and I really like the warm tones they produce. It's a wicked bummer that I can't get the shots I really want to get with him...more professional and all that. I know that I'm capable of it, it just sucks that my camera isn't. Anywho, we're off to bed now - I'll talk with you later hon - thanks for the advice hug2.gif

Awww I'd lend you my equipment any time if you lived closer. I've used a Nikon before, I could work with it but I didn't really like some of the controls.

As for the warm tones, you can do that in RAW.

thanks sweetie hug2.gif Tracy *says* that she'd let me borrow her lenses if I get a Nikon, but I highly doubt that, since she uses them professionally and wouldn't want to risk anything breaking.

Okay, the blinking picture frame is annoying. Photobucket doesn't show you that until after you're all done, and I'm not doing it all over again. laugh.gif
