Tangy, you can grow bananas? That is great! Your info says you live in NC. I didn't realize bananas could grow that far north.

Not only can I grow bananas but so can you!

http://www.bananas.org/

the link above is very informative forum about bananas including cold hardy bananas.

The most cold hardy banana is the Musa Basjoo which is what is pictured above. While they do make a real nice flower ( hoping for first one this year) they will not produce an edible banana. I grow them mainly because of the way they look and to use leaves for cooking, especially on the grill.

I do have what is called a dwarf cavendish, which was brought in over the winter in a pot and hopefully, it will make some bananas to eat.

You can usually find some bananas at home depot or lowes but they typically there are not the Basjoo. I am certain Basjoo can be grown in NY.

If you are willing to cover them, they will survive. Even if they die, sprouts come back from the old plant. Bananas are really just a big bulb.

If you closely in the picture above the turkey, you can also see a small needle palm which I am going to plant. I really like a tropical look mixed in with my hardwoods.

The house was built in 1855 and is a former Manse (It would be a Vicarage in England) which would have housed the local church minister (In this case the Free Kirk)

What an amazing residence! You have an amazing garden.

Are some the plants in your garden real old? Like planted at the time the house was built.

As for old plants, I had to do a lot to it when I first bought the house as the previous owners had neglected the garden a bit, so many of them were planted by me.

However, the clematis against the house wall is very old (100 years plus) and the box and beech/hawthorn hedges are pretty much as old as the house itself (I think)

It's a lot of work, especially in our wet and cold climate with a very short growing season, but the end result is worth it.

BTW Tangy, I investigated the possibility of bananas and you are right, it would be technically possible where I live, but due to me being away for long periods of time, I couldn't devote the constant care such tender plants would need, so I will have to pass on it.....pity, as I fancied having a go.

The more I look at your house, the more I like it! The rock pattern is very appealing.

Needless to say, they don't make them like that anymore (least not here in the states)

I was thinking that some of the landscaping was older. How cool to have plants that old in your yard. Beautiful hegdes and lawn too. Wow.

Maybe you can give bananas a try one year. Another nice tropical looking plant is a Canna Lily. Their leaves look like little banana leaves, however you do have to dig up the bulbs and store in a cool place.

Believe me,finding a cool place to store things is certainly not a problem here!

I posted this in the "What pissed you off today" thread but thought I'd post my problem here too since I want to figure out what to do.

My original post:

QUOTE (Janie @ Jul 31 2008, 12:08 PM)
I have (sorry, had) three potted herb plants in my kitchen, basil, oregano and rosemary. I go to make myself a grilled mozz cheese, tomato and basil sandwich and find my basil plant coated with, I don't know... aphids? Very tiny white bugs. It looked like someone had taken a salt shaker and sprinkled all the plants (I had four in there filling up a large pot). The oregano is fine as is the rosemary. Basil is what I love and use the most AND I just inspected that pot not two days earlier, I swear! And there were NO bugs. Ugh. Bugs. Ugh.

I think the plants are already a lost cause. (They are truly coated with white bugs.) I'm willing to start from scratch (buying plants - not going the seed route).

My questions:

1) Why did the buggers only go for the basil and not the oregano or the rosemary? The plants are right next to each other, just in front of the window.

2) Anything I should have done before to ensure that the aphids wouldn't have even gotten to my basil plants?

Of all my herbs! Basil is what I use the most!! I'm so mad.

I'm not sure why the aphids ignored your tomato and oregano plants, but i would hazard a guess that they naturally produce certain essential oils which repels aphids.

I reckon it is aphids you have and not whitefly as Basil naturally repels whitefly.

The good news is that this is easy to get rid of. Just mix up some dishwashing liguid with water and spray over the plant. Ifd you have a little garlic juice then you can also add that to the mix. leave overnight then rinse with cold water and the little twats should be mostly (or all) dead next morning.

Good luck

I second Fridge's motion!!! He gave you the exact recipe for ridding aphids that we use here. I put a couple tsps. of Dawn in a gal jug of water with a couple of cloves of garlic. Put it in a spray bottle and coat the basil.

If anyone has problems with basil outdoors, may I suggest ladybugs! I've had beautiful basil this year because the previous owner of this land stocked the property with ladybugs. They eat all the aphids for me in the garden!!!

Good luck!

Thanks so much you two (Fridge and Hare)!

I really appreciate the advice. I'm heading to the garden store this weekend to pick up brand spanking new basil plants and will remember what you said about the aphids.

I just checked my other two plants again (the oregano and rosemary) and still no aphids. Guess those herbs are just too stinky for the critters or something.

I've now got my allotment 653.gif It's 6ft high in thistles and 10ft high with brambles angry.gif

I've cut down about 2/3rds of the jungle and am working through the rest. We've cleared enough ground for the chicken run and have rescued 8 ex-battery hens. So far they have produced 10 eggs (in 2 days) and have toyed wit the idea of going outside but aren't very keen.

We are planning to grow our own vegetables and stuff once the ground is in a clear enough state to plant stuff. Ant suggestions folks?

I just added a gardening album to my Facebook profile...wondering if the general link will work here...

If it won't work, I'll post some of my pics here.
