I was taking 400 mg of Dilantin daily but after several years, my stomach began to have problems. I also didn't Dilantin because of the effect it had on my communication skills.

Now I take Keppra. My stomach doesn't bother me as much and I think I can communicate a little easier.

Keppra is $400 a month...OUCH!!!.

Keppra is supposedly the 1st drug specifically made for certain seizures.

It may not be designed for your type of seizures but talk to your doc if you don't know about it.

I mostly had the absent seizures or what is called Auras but would occasionally have the grand mal.

I feel your fustration

Good Luck!

Mike

Hey Mike, nice to meet you! trink39.gif

Right now, I'm on Disability, and that is taking care of the cost of my meds. Look into programs by either drug companies, or gov't programs that can help you with the cost of meds. Right now, I'm taking Lamictal, and it seems to be working well for me. Other than feeling tired and hungry all the time, I don't have any other complaints. Those used to be my problems, I couldn't sleep, and I'm a lousy eater anyway. I am taking 100mgs of Dilantin at night, but that's what I was taking before I started taking Lamictal. I think my Neuro just wants to wean me off Dilantin rather than just stop it right away.

That's exactly what your doc is doing. I was weened off Dilantin, converting to Keppra.

I don't have much more advice. I really don't know what to say other than I know what you are going through.Mike

I'm in Southern Calif. I don't know where you live but if you live out here, maybe we can hit the concert together and share Grand Mal stories before Neil hits the skins.

Now I see you live back east. Damn.

Mike

I wish I was back out west, I lived in Las Vegas for 11 years, and ever since I've been back here, the cold and humidity has made my E much worse. I'll probably be moving back out there in the near future, I miss the sunshine. It's always so cold, dark and gloomy here in PA. I talked to someone @ Disability, and they told me I can take by Disability bennies w/ me. That's how I get my meds right now, have you talked to your Dr about Disability?

Keppra is one of the few anti-epileptic drugs I have not tried, I guess any of my Neuro's haven't thought it was right for me. I used to take Depakote and Dilantin together but didn't have very good control with Depakote. I was on Keppra for a short while, but had a few bad episodes on it while I was sleeping. I became violent and still had bad Gran Mals on it. I was taken off of it, and was told to tell any Neuro that I ever see about it so he/she doesn't prescribe it to me. The medication game, as I call it, every time I have another seizure, they try a different one on me.

Donna...

I will put you Dad in my prayers and hope that he

gets back to his normal self. I know that you must

be worried sick. The tests will come back and the

docs will be able to treat him. rose.gif

Drum...

I am glad to hear that you are doing better. Keep

up on that schedule with the meds. Seems to be

helping a bit. I sure hope it continues. I hate when

the ones we care about are hurting or sick. rose.gif

When you say that you tok another one are you

referring to Grand Mals or other seizures? I know it

has been awhile since the last one. Do you keep a

journal of your diet? I know that the Ketogenic Diet

is suppose to help. But I wouldn't do it without checking

with the doctor first. You have to be monitored over the

first portion of this really well. There aren't many doctors

that try this with adults but I know that John Hopkins does

and has had some really good results.

I wish you lots of luck and strength.

Oh nice, just heard about this:

GADOLINIUM

Gadolinium is injected into the bloodstream to enhance MRI and MRA images

Gadolinium can cause nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) in patients with kidney problems

NSF is a debilitating, potentially fatal disease for which there is no known cure

The pharmaceutical companies knew about the life-threatening side effects as early as April 2006

QUOTE
The FDA ordered a black box warning in May 2007 for the labels of all gadolinium dyes
Gadolinium is the active ingredient in several different brands of contrast dyes used to enhance MRI and MRA images. In April of 2006, reports began to surface that certain patients using gadolinium dyes were developing nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF), previously known as nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy (NFD). NSF is a disease which causes a thickening of the skin, connective tissues, muscles and internal organs throughout the body. There is no known treatment for NSF, it becomes worse over time and can lead to death.

At the Law Offices of Howard L. Nations, we represent people who have been injured by defective drugs or medical devices. If you or someone you know has developed nephrogenic systemic fibrosis after undergoing an MRI or MRA, please contact our offices for a free case evaluation by one of our experienced pharmaceutical attorneys.
