Yeah, Freewill and Cygnus are both really high!

How about Vital Signs at the end? "Everybody got to deviaaaaate..."

I thought that was pretty high. The start of Lock And Key is pretty high-pitched, too.

I'm in class now, so all of this is done by running records back in my head:

Vital signs is a D#/Eb5

Lock and Key begins with a B4

I'm pretty sure that Available Light's D is the highest note since at least Power Windows.

The Fountain of Lamneth has the largest range (so far as I can tell right now)- E3-G5

Runner-ups are 2112 (F#/Gb3-G5) and Freewill (E3-F5)

The smallest range is most likely Different Strings (there is nothing outside of A3-E4)

Freewill/FoL have close to lowest note (As far as I can remember), an E3

The low note also appears in Distant Early Warning, Roll the Bones,

I'm almost positive that the low part in the Time Stand Still chorus includes a C#/Db3 (Geddy sings an octave up live, but I think theres actually an octave-apart harmony on the album)

After Hemispheres (I think Geddy injured his voice on that tour or something...)

The highest note on Permanent Waves is F5 in Freewill

The highest note on Moving Pictures is E5 in Tom Sawyer

I can't figure off hand what the highest note on Signals is...

The highest note on Grace Under Pressure is C5 in Between the Wheels

The highest note on Power Windows C#/Db(?)5 on Marathon

The highest note on Hold Your Fire is B4 in Time Stand Still (?)

The highest note on Presto is D5 in Available Light

The highest note on Roll the Bones is ??? (no idea, I haven't listened to this album for the longest time)

The highest note on Counterparts is B4 in Everyday Glory (?)

The highest note on Test for Echo is C5 in Resist

The highest note on Vapor Trails is ??? (again, I've forgotten most of the vocal melodies from this album)

The highest note on Snakes and Arrows is B4 in Far Cry

Feel free to correct me...I am actually in class afterall...

I'll also post any other random info anyone might request tongue.gif

Resist seems to have a lot of low notes for Geddy. It's almost entirely double-tracked with the backing vocals in the low range.. a double melody of sorts.

The Way the Wind Blows also has some low-pitched doubled vocals.... on a few times where he sings "..the wind blows..."... the "blows" is pretty low.

Bravest Face seems to have some lower notes.

Bravado is fairly low range in the verses.

Neurotica in the "oo-ooh" part has some low points.

The spoken parts in Double Agent sound processed, not natural.

The Speed of Love at the breakdown around 2:45 is pretty low, especially "we don't have TO TOUCH"...

Cut to the Chase has quite a few lower vocals in the verses. It also has some really high parts --"But I'm mad enough to remember the future, the way things ought to be." Good candidate for song with the widest range.

Ghost of a Chance in general is pretty low. "Fate" and "Grace" are near the bottom of his range a couple times.

Geddy sings rather low at the start of The Trees. "...more sunlight, but the oaks ignore their pleas."

Good catch. That part also has a very, very unusual interval in music --

"...for the maples want more sunlight, but the oaks..."

maples want <== G#3

more <==G2

That's a drop of of an octave plus one semitone. In jazz you occasionally see the diminished 9, and even Beethoven used it Moonlight Sonata, but those are usually played at the same time, in a chord, or across instruments.

Very unusual to sing one note, then drop to the other.

Aha, I KNEW I remembered seeing a low F on sheet music before...

In Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres, in the spacey intro leading up before "Apollo was astonished" --

"...thunderbolts, across the sky, I cannot move, I cannot hide, I feel a silent scream begin inside."

The red "I" is a low F, F2. That's too low for most natural tenors to reach. Most males are baritones, and F2 is at the very bottom of their range, some being able to hit the low E2 or D2 with a struggle (or when we first wake up in the morning) wink.gif

That puts Cygnus X-1 as having a 3 and half octave range. Incredible. The Star Spangled Banner only has a 1 and half octave range, and many people can't even sing that range.

I'm pretty sure that that section is still in the octave 3 range..."I have memory and awareness" goes as low as a D3. And you're cheating by counting both books as one song tongue.gif

I wonder what Geddy would say if he saw this discussion laugh.gif

EDIT. Actually, after listening to it, the sheet music may have printed a low F, but Geddy sings it as a C3, not an F2. The rest of that Battle of Armageddon prelude has as its lowest note an A2 in a couple spots.

That still is a 3 octave range for Cygnus.

Lowest note still G2 in The Trees, right fledge?

EDIT again.... that's an A2, not a G2 ohmy.gif

"more sunlight" A2 B2

I don't know which keyboard you're using, but F2 is an octave below what Geddy can sing. The red "I" is F3--a P5 below middle C.

I don't know if the note in "Available Light" can truly be considered here--I've always been convinced that he processed his voice through some kind of machine to get that note--it does NOT sound natural, even for him. It sounds to me like he dovetailed a synth track into his voice track for that one note. Am I in left field on this?!

Huge NecroBump.

Here is the definitive analysis.

I am a user on a site called The Range Place (Named Queenfan11), which talks about vocal ranges. It features pages for many singers, that show their voice type, vocal range, and other info.

Here is Geddy's page.

http://therangeplace.forummotions.com/t3901-geddy-lee

The highest studio note listed on the page is Bb5 from Cygnus X-1, though he hit B5 live on two occasions, once in Cygnus and once in Something For Nothing.

As for the other songs people nominated:

The highest note in Circumstances is D5

The highest note in Freewill is F5

The highest note in Available Light is D5

The highest note in The Necromancer is E5

The highest note in Fountain of Lamneth is G5

The highest note in Battle Scar is E5

The highest note in 2112 is G#5

The highest note in By-Tor And The Snow Dog is G#5

The highest note in A Passage To Bangkok is E5

The highest note in Fly By Night is E5

The highest note in Lessons is G#5

The highest note in Vital Signs is E5

And the highest note in Lock and Key is C#5.

New octaves begin with the C note. Geddy's most commom modern day high note is B4 (the final held out note of Working MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN) The next note in the scale would be a C5.

So using some of his highest examples, this goes from the "low" B4 to his peak at B5.

B4- Working Man (final note)

C5- Resist (I can learn to resist, ANYthing but temptation.

C#5- Marathon (final "ONE MOMENT'S high")

D5- Fly by night (FLY by night..... CHANGE my life)

D#5- Cygnus X-1 (the x-ray is her SIRen song)

E5- 2112 (WE'VE TAKen CARE of EVEryTHING

F5- Freewill (each of us a CELL OF Awareness)

F#5- Hemispheres (every soul a BATtlefield

G5- Lessons (NO you didn't listen Again)

G#5- 2112 Soliloquy (my spirits ARE low)

A5- Finding My Way (at around 1:30 YEAH oh yeah)

A#5- Cygnus X-1 (torn aPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAART)

B5- Cygnus X-1 Live: boot from Fresno, CA 1977

C6- sadly,, no evidence he's ever hit this note and ventured into the 6th octave

Honestly, I'd say 2112 is the highest. The only notes in Cygnus i need to dodge are "LIGHT of deneb" (F5) "HEART of Cygnus" (F5) "My ship can not resist HER long" (F#5) "GAINS CONTROL"(G5) "SEA UNENDING" (A5) and "TORN APART" (Bb5)

In 2112, I have to dodge pretty much every high part in Temples, Presentation, and Soliloquy.
