Dread Pirate Robert
Saw this movie again a little while ago, for about the 3rd time. Outstanding movie. The first time I saw it, it really raised my opinion of Stephen King, by a lot. It seems that Mr. King is capable of some really good stuff after all, instead of just cheap horror shit. (he wrote the book which the movie is based upon, which I have admittedly never read. Come to think of it, I have never read any of his books, but just seen several movies based upon his books) Edited May 10, 2007 by Dread Pirate Robert

ES-335
Love this movie. I saw it today on one of the cable channels, stopped and watched about an hour of it.
Dread Pirate Robert
QUOTE (rushengal @ May 9 2007, 08:28 PM) This is one of my favorite movies. Then it would appear that I had earlier made a serious misjudgment about Mr. King. My apologies to him, on the off chance that he is a member of this forum

The books are way better. I saw The Green Mile for the first time a few nights ago on FX. I liked it. I think that movie was the first movie to make me actually hate one of the characters. Loved them all.

pedro2112
To be fair, I think that the Shining (with Jack Nicholson) and the Dead Zone (with Chrissy Walken) were also excellent movies.
treeduck
I hated The Green Mile, the novel, I read it part by part, when it was originally published and it seemed like a padded-out short story that borrowed heavily from the story of the Birdman of Alcatraz. Dull, dull, dull and way too sentimental I thought. Then they made a film out of it and cast the grossly overrated Tom Hanks, so obviously I didn't enjoy the film, it's a case of the Emperor's new clothes for me... Loved them all. Same here. Agreed. The problem seems to be with that fact that DPR has only seen movies based on King's books... and the majority of them are horrible. However the ones mentioned here are are incredible movies - with the only exception of a good horror movie being The Shining. But I attribute that to Kubrick, not to King. prog.fusion
the movie adaptations of King's books are beyond horrible. Save for The Shining, IT and maybe Pet Sematary. The Green Mile book is good. havent seen the movie yet.
treeduck
The treeduck King film adaptation analysis: Carrie (reasonable with a great turn by Sissy S) Salem's Lot (excellent TV mini-series with, retrospectively, a great cast) The Shining (great) Creepshow (daft but ok) The Dead Zone (very good film, one of cronenberg's best, Walken Skerrit, Lom and Martin Sheen were impressive) Children of the Corn (abysmal, nothing at all like the story) Firestarter (Martin Sheen again but this time it sucked) Silver Bullet (not a bad little horror show) Maximum Overdrive (terrible - boring, mixed up, a real mess) Stand By Me (excellent, one the best) The Running Man (so-so action thriller) Pet Semetary (total crap, it's nothing like the book) Graveyard Shift (worse than total crap, an abortion of a film) It (Almost bad enough to ruin my memories of the book, ugh avoid.) Misery (fantastic, a powerful tour de force, this almost matches the book) The Dark Half (poor, shoddy, drab, dull, weak, a hard book to adapt though) The Tommyknockers (hideous, the fact that an ex porn star was one of the leading actors should tell you all you need to know) Needful Things (poor in the same way The Dark Half was) The Stand (weak to average about a million light years from amtching the book) Thinner (not seen it) Apt Pupil (Well I didn't like the story so that didn't help) The Green Mile (overrated nonsense, with the hated Hanks making it worse) Hearts in Atlantis (Not bad) Dreamcatcher (not seen it - on purpose I've not read the book yet) Cat's Eye (pretty good compendium, James Woods is good value) Shawshank Redemption (Another overrated prison drama, I prefer Escape from Alcatraz but that's just me maybe) Desperation (not seen it) The Night Flier (a stinker, gay) Delores Claibourne (haven't seen it, the book was only ok though)
