Omigod I just can't choose one..... the challenge had been immense!!!

Please, don't make me do it... Please don't make me choose.....

aaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Ok I'm under control now - 2112 is the winner today in the sundog's fav list....Please don't hold me to that if we're ever in conversation!!!

Definitely Natural Science.
This song achieves the perfect balance between different elements.

Natural Science is an example of the quincesential (spelling?) Rush song. It has that multi segmented formula we have all grown to love!...BUT! I picked The Trees!

It has the most charm of all Rush songs.

It has beauty , especially in the intro and in the interlude.

The lyric have a great point, and frankly are quaint.

IT Rocks 2.gif

The live versions are better than the studio.

Doh, first time i've seen this..

Tough choice, Natural Science, Spirit of Radio, Analog Kid, Xanadu, The Trees, La Villa, all very deserving..

BUT, I went with Cygnus X-1 Book II - Hemispheres.... NOTHING quite like it..!!

Every time I get asked this question, the same answer pops into my head, and it looks like I'm not the only one.

Natural Science is THE definitive Rush song.

Not my favourite of all-time...but it's the one that I am listening to over and over and over at this point in time...The Analog Kid

you move me, move me

with your buildings and your eyes

autumn woods and winter skies

yes.gif What an amazing song. The lyrics are some of the best Neil has ever written IMO.

I always come back to Analog Kid, and Signals in general. I grew up in the 60's and 70's and that CD just speaks to me - and probably every other American kid of the time. I remember playing Countdown the day the Columbia exploded .... Not my favorite of all time, either. But damn, it sure gets into your blood!

Ya know, excellent post...I vary between Spirit of Radio, La Villa Strangiato, 2112, Natural Science....I went with Spirit of Radio....So perfect, such a great punch of an opening riff with perfect musicianship meet song lyric meets catchiness....just unbelievable....unbelievable....

luckilly i've always had a very favorite rush song, subdivisons, so this choice was easy, though tom sawyer is a close second, and their are dozens of others also very worthy. recently i made a compilation for a friend trying to introduce him to rush - it's not exactly my fave list as for example, i didn't want to put TOO many songs form one album on it, so i got rid of red barchetta (since MP was already so well represented) and i kept off the analog kid, which ALMOST made it. i wanted to include overture, but i couldn't separate it from the rest of track 1 of 2112 on my burner. also, i didn't include animate since i thought it might scare him as a newbie. here's what made it though - somewhat close to my fave songs in track order, not in order by favorites:

1. tom saywer

2. sudbivisions

3. closer to the heart

4. bastille day

5. xanadu

6. yyz (from ESL for drum solo)

7. distant early warning

8. the spirit of radio

9. freewill

10. dreamline

11. limelight

12. a passage to bangkok

13. la villa strangiato

naturally i could make a second best of disc that would be just about as strong...

Good list Goober! However, you shoulda put Red Barchetta on and left Tom Sawyer off. Everyone has heard that, and RB simply kicks ass!

while i appreciate the sentiment, i just couldn't leave off tom sawyer. i wouldn't be able to live with myself, the guilt would have been insurmountable... no.gif moon.gif 1022.gif tongue.gif

Too bad they won't play The Camera Eye live. It seems to be quite popular.

If you listen to any Moving Pictures or Signals boot, you will see that this song actually did not translate that well live. All their other epics were fantastic live (esp. Xanadu and Natural Science) but The Camera Eye always seemed to fall short in concert.
